MOSES LAKE - It's been said records are made to be broken. And that's what the Moses Lake girls 4x100 relay team has done their last two out of three times on the track.

On March 24, the team of Kayla Grigg, Alysha Overland, London Cleverly and Diamond Ransom set a new Moses Lake High School record with a time of 50.84, besting the 50.90 mark set in 2011. On Monday, the team of Grigg, Overland, Ransom and Caylah Lunning broke the record again with a time of 50.05 at the Davis Invite.

"That finish ranks the girls No. 1 in 4A competition," parent volunteer sprint coach Eugene Ransom said. "We have three different combinations of girls performing in the 4x100, but this particular group seems to excel above the others."

That very well may be, but the team as a whole push each other to be their best.

"A lot of people including some at our own high school assumed we weren't going to do very well this year," Lunning said. "So we are out to prove them wrong."

The keys to their success coach Ransom said are strong work ethics and determination to be the best they can be.

"The girls have really bought into the system we've installed," he said. "They've been working very hard getting their handoff's down, and once we implement our speed training, they are going to be scary good."

When asked what the team thought about Ransom's high expectations, the girls responded with a collective, "I think he's right."

The biggest test for the 4x100 team will come this weekend at the Pasco Invite as they match up against some of the leagues best.

Their time of 50.05 ranks them in the top five heading into the event, but the girls are looking to bring home top honors. But they'll have to break a time of 49.54 to do it.

"If they read the track right and don't have any trouble with their handoffs, they have a real shot at it," Ransom said.

Another Moses Lake record that could fall this weekend is the 46.0 mark in the 300 hurdles.

Alysha Overland, not to be confused with identical twin sister Stephanie, who is a member of the 4x100 rely team too, is performing in the event.

She has only ran the hurdles four times, and has a personal best of 46.45, which ranks her No. 2 in the state in 4A competition.

"That (the ranking) is a real surprise to me," she said. "When the season began, I didn't really want to run hurdles ... I was afraid I was going to fall down. But now that I'm starting to get my form down, it's my favorite event to run."
