MOSES LAKE - Grant County Sheriff's officials gleaned information on several recent burglaries after serving a search warrant at a Moses Lake home.
An off-duty sheriff's deputy was shopping at Bargain Town thrift store in Moses Lake Saturday when he saw a man selling items to the store staff, according to Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones on Wednesday. The deputy reportedly recognized the items as matching descriptions of property stolen in a string of recent burglaries near Moses Lake.
On Wednesday morning, sheriff's deputies brought several burglary victims to Bargain Town where they identified "more than a few" items of stolen property, Jones stated. The store's staff was cooperative and helpful, and handed over records of purchases reportedly including the identity of the seller, Benjamin Hilton, 18.
Deputies then served a search warrant at Hilton's home on Road K.2 Northeast, finding more suspected stolen property including computers, electronics, firearms and gas powered lawn tools, Jones said. They also reportedly found a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Hilton was subsequently arrested during a traffic stop near Moses Lake and booked in the Grant County Jail on numerous charges, including possession of stolen property, trafficking of stolen property, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of marijuana under 40 grams, possession of meth and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Deputies were still sorting through property Wednesday, trying to match the property to its rightful owners. As of Wednesday evening deputies logged 64 individual pieces of evidence, according to the patrol supervisor at the scene.
"Our patrol deputies have been working extra hard on solving local burglaries," Jones stated. "Their efforts have been paying off as we continue to find and recover the property of the burglary victims, and arrest the folks who we believe are responsible."
