Council to decide fate of Highway 41 trail project

POST FALLS - The Post Falls City Council will decide tonight whether to have the urban renewal agency proceed on a pedestrian trail project under the Interstate 90 overpass at Highway 41 between Seltice Way and Mullan Avenue.
The urban renewal agency in November decided to proceed with engineering for the project. The City Council has also supported the project in the past.
However, opposition has grown since the trail would be on state right of way and the cost estimate rose from $725,000 to $982,000.
"While everyone supports the project from the standpoint of public safety and enhancing the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians, there may be some issue with the fact that it is in the Idaho Transportation Department right of way and some in the public and on the council believe that ITD should pay for the improvements," City Administrator Eric Keck said. "The discussion is to either reaffirm the decision to support the project or to ask the URA to cease work on the project."
