OTHELLO - The Huskies got two first half goals, and added another in the second 40 minutes of play to win their 10th game in a row Saturday. The 3-0 shut out over the Red Devils improves Othello to 4-0 in CWAC league play and 10-0 overall.
"I am very happy with the success we have had so far," coach Bernie Garza said. "With the weather getting warmer each day, we are starting to see more and more fan support. It is great to see everyone turnout as it makes our players feel appreciated."
Othello came into the game flying high after a 6-0 win over Wapato April 9. But East Valley had beaten them 7-0 on Tuesday as well, so anything was possible on the pitch.
The matched looked pretty even on paper, and the two teams played it pretty close to the vest on the field too.
But, Jorge Campos, who continues to be the flame that fuels the offensive firepower for the Huskies, scored the first goal of the match at the six minute-mark to put the home team ahead early in the contest, 1-0.
"We got on the scoreboard by a long pass down the left sideline from Jason Rodriguez that found Jorge streaking past an East Valley defender who blasted a shot into the back of the net for the one goal lead," Garza said. "After that it was all East Valley for awhile as they took some good shots, but Martel came up with some big saves."
The biggest coming midway through the first half after Alec Alvarez was called for a hand ball in the penalty box giving the Red Devils a chance to tie the match.
"But Martel guessed the correct way and blocked the penalty kick and then jumped up and stopped the ensuing attempt after it had rebounded directly to the shooter," Garza said. "That was the turning point in the match."
Othello went up 2-0 seconds before the first half whistle sounded on a rocket shot by Ociel Romero (Jessie Villareal) from 12 yards out to give the Huskies a little more breathing room.
"That was the dagger in the heart so to speak," Garza said. "That killed any hopes East Valley had of coming back."
Vilarreal (Romero) made it 3-0 at the 61st minute of play. At that point Garza began to substitute players to give his starters some rest.
"After Jessie scored it was time for the bench players to get some action," Garza said. "It was nice to have a three goal cushion so the y could see some playing time."
Othello's Saucedo had eight saves on the match, and recorded eighth shut out of the season.
The Huskies are back in action today as they travel to Pullman (11-0) for a non-league match against the Greyhounds.
"I am seriously thinking of playing all non-starters to rest my players and get ready for the biggest match of the season so far," Garza said. "The league title and home field advantage implication will be on the line on Thursday as we face Toppenish who is also 4-0."
The winner of the match Garza said should be in control of the league. A loss could have big implications for Othello
