Nominations sought for NIC alumni awards

The North Idaho College Alumni Association is currently accepting nominations for its annual alumni awards. Nominations are due May 15.

The Distinguished Alumni Award is the association's most prestigious award presented to an NIC alumnus for a record of significant achievement in a chosen field of interest or profession who has developed a regionally-, nationally- or internationally-recognized reputation.

The Alumni of the Year Award is presented to an alumnus that has provided ongoing service to the college or NIC Alumni Association.

The Honorary Alumnus Award recognizes an outstanding individual who, though not an alumnus of NIC, has enhanced the college or NIC Alumni Association through dedication and service.

Nominees are needed for all three awards. Additional informationsuch as the award descriptions, past recipients and a nomination form can be downloaded at www.nic.edu/alumni.

Students win spring NIC speech contest

Five students topped the annual North Idaho College Spring 2012 Speech Contest, earning awards for speeches written and presented through Communications 101 classes this semester. Participants were chosen from students in 23 different sections of speech classes at NIC this semester.

Students were selected by their peers to represent their classes in the contest, which is judged by NIC students, staff and faculty each semester.

Brendan Latimer from Post Falls won first place and $150 with his speech "Breaking News: Men and Women Are Different."

Derrick Noll from Hayden placed second, winning $125 for his speech "Do You See What I See? Probably Not" on perception and groupthink.

Jason Burns from Coeur d'Alene placed third and earned $100 with his speech "You May Want to Talk to a Lawyer" about the requirements and benefits of becoming a lawyer.

Marcus Torres of Coeur d'Alene placed fourth and earned $75 with an informative speech titled "Welcome to Yellowstone."

Jeremy Butler from Coeur d'Alene earned fifth place and $50 with "Sharp Knives Save Lives" about saving a life with the use of his knife while active in the military.
