PREP ROUNDUP: Stephenson scores on error, gives St. Maries victory

ST. MARIES - Ashton Stephenson scored on a throwing error with two outs in the seventh inning as the St. Maries Lumberjacks beat the Priest River Spartans 12-11 in an Intermountain League baseball game at City Park on Thursday.

"It was a big win for us in the standings," St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. "It was a typical game for us and Priest River. The last couple of years, we've had lots of one-run games. In the end, it could have gone either way."

Dillon Michael went 2 for 4 with three RBIs for St. Maries (4-6, 4-1 IML), which hosts Kellogg on Saturday.

Priest River is 2-5, 2-3.

POST FALLS - Sophomore Nate Gomer went 3 for 4 with five RBIs as the Trojans beat the Bulldogs in the first game of a scheduled nonleague doubleheader.

"We were able to throw strikes and put the bats on the ball," Post Falls coach Dustin Frank said. "It was exciting to see Nate Gomer step up and have the game that he had."

Gomer hit two-run singles in the first and fourth inning for Post Falls (3-6), which hosts Coeur d'Alene on Thursday.

The second game of the doubleheader was called due to darkness with Post Falls leading 10-3 in the fifth inning.

SANDPOINT - Dara Kolar had three hits for Post Falls, but Sandpoint took control with a seven-run second inning to capture the first game of a scheduled doubleheader at Travers Park.

Maggie Kirscher had three hits and struck out seven in six innings of relief for Sandpoint (2-5).

The second game was called due to darkness with the Bulldogs leading 7-5 after three innings.

Cassie Worley and Kolar hit home runs to stake the Trojans (0-11) to an early 5-2 lead.

Post Falls plays host to Coeur d'Alene on Thursday.

ST. MARIES - Clarissa Stephenson beat the throw home on a fielder's choice grounder in the sixth inning, snapping a 5-all tie and lifting the Lumberjacks past the Spartans in Intermountain League play.

Katie Schaum followed with an RBI single for St. Maries (4-8, 4-3 IML), and the third run of the inning scored on a groundout.

"I think we are just going to have a nice little battle all season with all of the other teams (for second place)," St. Maries coach Todd Bitterman said.

Brittany Krampert hit a two-run double in the fourth inning, and scored on a single by Kelsie Fink to put Priest River (4-2, 3-2) up 5-2.

St. Maries returns to action next Monday at home vs. the Moscow junior varsity.

Kellogg boys, girls win at Kootenai meet

HARRISON FLATS - Garret Wendt (200, high jump, long jump) and Taylor Sheppard (high jump, 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) each won three events for the Wildcats as Kellogg won both the boys and girls team titles at a meet at Kootenai.

Brandon Carman (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) was a double winner for Kootenai, which finished second.

Shannon Miller was a double winner for the Lakeside girls in the shot put and discus.

POST FALLS - The visiting Vikings swept the girls singles and doubles matches to down the Trojans.

"The Coeur d'Alene girls were dominant, especially against our younger team," Post Falls coach Kirk Hartzell said. "Our guys weren't too bad, but we tried to mix things up against them. They've just got too many quality players across the board."

Coeur d'Alene hosts Lakeland on Thursday.

Post Falls will travel to Sandpoint on Saturday.

Hailey Little and Maggie Heidenreich rallied from down a set to win their No. 1 doubles match for Lake City in three games.

"That was a monumental match," Lake City coach Bob Brunn said. "I think they just played better as a team and didn't make as many mistakes."

Lake City travels to University High in Spokane today.
