MISSOULA — Charlo athletes cleaned up in eye-opening fashion against Class AA, A, B and C competition at the MCPS Invitational in Missoula on Saturday, April 14.

Running, jumping and throwing against some of the area’s best athletes regardless of class over the weekend, the Lady Vikings nabbed 19 points to finish 10th of 16 teams, while the Vikings scored 40 points, good for a seventh place performance.

Dawn Blevins earned ABC Field Events MVP thanks to her dominating 128’7” javelin toss, easily good for first place and the new season landmark for Class C throwers. Second place was more than 13 feet behind with a throw of 115’4”. A year ago, Blevins’ farthest throw was 114 feet.

Also placing for the girls was speedster Aspen Runkel, who captured fifth place in the 300 hurdles in a time of 45.41 seconds, less than four seconds off the victor’s pace. The Charlo girls also earned sixth place in the 1,600 relay, finishing in 4:24.60.

Stephen Delaney, who seemingly can’t be stopped in hurdling events, led the Charlo boys. The senior improved his record to 4-0 in hurdling events on the young season thanks to victories in the 110 and 300 hurdles. Delaney took down the 110 in 15.09 seconds while teammate Tra Ludeman earned points for the Vikings with a 16.01 fourth place time. Delaney also captured the 300 hurdles in an amazing 39.80 seconds, shedding 44 hundredths of a second off his already season-best time in the state and helped the 400 relay team to third place in 45 seconds, just 1.09 ticks behind first. Those performances helped Delaney be named ABC Track MVP of the meet.

Also helping the Vikings take seventh were Webb O’Neill and Jacen Petersen, who earned a tie for second and sixth place in the pole vault with jumps of 12’6” and 12’ respectively.

Charlo will head to the University of Montana for a meet in Missoula on Thursday, April 19 as they look to continue their fast start to the year.
