Hearing scheduled for Silverwood rezoning request
The Kootenai County commissioners will hold a hearing this week over Silverwood Theme Park's request to rezone 425.5 acres of its property from rural to commercial.
Spokesperson Nancy DiGiammarco said after the park's recent zone change of 95 acres, the county had recommended addressing the various rural zoned parcels scattered amid the commercial parcels on the theme park property.
The zoning hodgepodge is the result of purchasing parcels for the park over more than two decades, DiGiammarco said.
"We found we were operating on a mix of rural and commercial zoning, which is something that 25 years ago was probably OK," she said. "But today we needed to actually get everything rezoned so that it actually reflected the use of the property."
The rural pieces are located around different areas of the park, she said.
Nothing is planned to be built on those parcels now, she said, but it's a reasonable step to rezone now in case any more projects develop down the road.
"This is just housekeeping, getting everything to conform," DiGiammarco said. "We don't have any plans to do anything new with these pieces or parcels at this time."
The hearing before the commissioners is scheduled for 9 a.m. today in the board chambers, on the third floor of the county administration building at 451 Government Way.
The county examiner held a hearing on the proposal in February and recommended approval.
HREI to hold Workers Memorial Day service
COEUR d'ALENE - A Worker's Memorial Day service is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Human Rights Education Institute, 414 W. Mullan Ave.
"In this country, on average each day, 14 workers die on the job as a result of workplace injuries- women and men who go to work, never to return home to their families and loved ones," according to a press release.
In 2011, six Idaho workers lost their lives on the job, and seven Idaho servicemen were killed in action.
The North Idaho Central Labor Council will host the event. The public is welcome.
If you have a new, relocated or expanded business, or announcement of events, promotions or awards, The Press wants to let our readers know. The service is free and items run Tuesday through Saturday. To get the word on the street on your movers and shakers, call city editor Bill Buley at 664-8176 Ext. 2016 or e-mail bbuley@cdapress.com.
