A Coeur d'Alene elementary school teacher will be honored by President Obama next week in Washington, D.C.

Erin Lenz, from Winton Elementary, could be named the National Teacher of the Year Tuesday when Obama announces the 2012 honoree during a ceremony for the finalists in the Rose Garden at the White House.

Lenz  became a finalist when she received the Idaho State Teacher of the Year award in November. State schools chief Tom Luna visited Coeur d'Alene and announced the award as a surprise to Lenz during an assembly at the school.

Jill Biden, a 30-year educator, will host a reception for the teachers Monday at the Vice President's Residence at the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C.

The National Teacher of the Year is chosen from among the State Teachers of the Year by a national selection committee representing the major national education organizations organized by the Council of Chief State School Officers.
