Don't expect the battle for the starting quarterback job at the University of Idaho to be settled following spring practice, which concludes tonight with the Silver and Gold Scrimmage at 6 p.m. at the Kibbie Dome.
Dominique Blackman and Taylor Davis, both juniors, are competing for the job. Blackman sat out last year after transferring from Old Dominion. Davis played in seven games last year, starting three.
There are some things that each does better than the other, Idaho coach Robb Akey said, without getting specific. Both have a similar completion percentage in spring scrimmages, Akey said.
"There hasn't been a lot of separation at this time," Akey said. "I'm fine with that. I do believe they'll separate themseves at some point in time."
* Akey said the offense is adjusting to the new schemes put in by the new offensive coaches - Jason Gesser, in his first year as offensive coordinator; new offensive line coach Gordie Shaw and new receivers coach/passing game coordinator Mike Levenseller.
"I like the way those guys are working together, and I like the way the players are responding to them," Akey said. "It's our third offensive line coach in three years and if there is one unit that needs to have cohesiveness, it's that offensive line."
Injuries have prevented the anticipated starters from playing together this spring, though Akey said the extra reps given to the others could help develop depth.
On defense, Akey said senior Gary Walker is "having a helluva spring" at safety. Three others - junior Trey Williams, the best gunner on the Vandals' punt team last year; senior Thaad Thompson, coming off knee surgery; and Bradley Njoku, a sophomore who returned an interception for a touchdown in last week's scrimmage, are battling for the other safety job.
• Often dubbed the Silver and Gold Game, Akey said tonight’s event will resemble more of a scrimmage. After some special teams work, the offense and defense will go at it for roughly 40-45 plays, with the offense put in several different situations — backed up near the goal line, in the red zone, near midfield, in a two-minute drill, etc.
“And obviously the head coach is going to be praying for everybody to remain healthy,” Akey said.
Admission to tonight’s scrimmage is free.
• Akey said several Vandals from the 2011 team are getting looks from NFL teams.
“I think Korey Toomer’s got a pretty good chance of getting drafted,” Akey said, noting the linebacker/short-yardage fullback has visited Miami, Tampa Bay, Cincinnati, Seattle and one of the New York teams.
There is interest in linebacker Tre’Shawn Robinson as a fullback, with the Seahawks one of those teams interested, he said.
Defensive lineman Michael Cosgrove is being considered as an offensive or defensive lineman, and offensive linemen Tyrone Novikoff and Matt Cleveland could be late-round draft picks or free-agent signees, Akey said.

“I’ve been very impressed by Zach’s natural ability to rush the passer,” Eck said. “And he’s worked hard on his body, he’s up to about 222 pounds now, and I really think he can be a difference maker for us. He’s still doing some things with the linebackers, but I think his speed can give some offensive linemen problems (as an edge rusher).”

“The whole process has been completely amazing,” said Nathan Williams, now in his fourth season as the Badgers boys basketball coach. “And the parents … it’s an hour and a half to Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, when we’d play an AAU game, and an hour and a half back, and there were so many times there was 6, 8 inches of snow. And we’ve got a game at 8 a.m. They’d always schedule us at 8 a.m., coming from Bonners. So we’re waking up at 5 … it was crazy. But the commitment from the parents and the kids has been amazing.”
