PREP SOFTBALL: Lakeland wins 4A IEL title

MOSCOW - Kristin Klopatek had eight strikeouts in the first game and hit a grand slam in the second as the Lakeland Hawks swept the Moscow Bears 6-0 and 11-0 to win the 4A Inland Empire League championship Saturday at Ghormley Park.

With the win, Lakeland (9-5, 7-1 4A IEL) will host the opening round of the 4A Region 1 tournament on May 8.

"We just really came out strong offensively and played great defense," Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua said. "It's nice to get to host the opening round of districts. I'm really proud of my team."

Tifani Schorzman had four RBIs in the first game and Jordan Jewell had seven hits on the day for Lakeland, which hosts Post Falls on Monday.

POST FALLS - Kyra Haskew had two hits in the first game and Dara Kolar had two in the second game for the Trojans, who fell twice to the Bengals in 5A Inland Empire League play.

"We played a little better today," Post Falls coach Jack Foster said. "We just had one bad inning in the second game. We made some errors and gave up a bunch of runs. We just can't seem to get away from that one big inning. Dara's hitting the heck out of the ball. We're hitting the ball hard - it's just right at them."

Post Falls (0-14, 0-7 5A IEL) travels to Lakeland on Monday.

Lewiston (3-3 5A IEL) travels to Lake City for a doubleheader on Monday.

SANDPOINT - The visiting Vikings pounded out 35 hits en route to a sweep of the Bulldogs in nonleague play at Travers Park.

A whopping 10 Vikings had at least two hits in a game, including catcher Brooke Albertson, who laced two doubles while filling in behind the plate in Game 2.

"I thought Brooke Albertson did a great job of catching," Vikings coach Larry Bieber said. "We hit the ball hard all day and strung some hits together."

Lindsie Scholwinski tossed a two-hitter and Nikki Ragsdale a three-hitter for the Vikings (11-4), who play at Moscow on Tuesday.

Paula Hendrickson drove in two runs, and Maggie Kirscher and Calena Lawson each ripped a double to lead Sandpoint (2-9). Bulldogs coach Derek Dickinson felt his team came to play, but simply ran into a juggernaut.

"That's the best hitting Coeur d'Alene team I've seen," Dickinson said. "We came out with some life in both games, and had some solid play in stretches, but you just have to tip your hat to Coeur d'Alene."

The Bulldogs host Libby (Mont.) on Tuesday.

PRIEST RIVER - Sophomore Brittany Krampert went 3 for 4 with a double and home run in the second game to help the Spartans hand the Timberlake Tigers their first Intermountain League loss.

Timberlake (8-3, 7-1 IML) won the first game with a two-hit shutout off the arm of their ace pitcher Nicole Cameron.

"If anything happened today, it was Priest River kicking the sleeping dog," Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. "Sometimes it takes a loss to wake up and we'll definitely bring our 'A' game the rest of the way."

Sydnie Malloy went 3 for 4 with a triple in the first game and went 2 for 4 in the second game for the Tigers, who host Bonners Ferry on Tuesday.

Kelsey Bradbury struck out six in the second game to pick up the win for Priest River (7-4, 4-3), which hosts Kellogg on Tuesday.
