TOPPENISH - The Toppenish Wildcats accomplished what no other team has been able to do so far this season; beat Othello in a soccer match.

The Huskies hit the road Thursday looking to keep their unblemished record in tact, but were sent home with a 2-1 double overtime loss. The defeat drops Othello to 4-1 in CWAC league play and 11-1 overall. The win for Toppenish moves the Wildcats to top of the heap with a 6-0 conference record.

"Toppenish was 5-0 coming into the game and I knew it would come down to the wire," coach Bernie Garza said. "Unfortunately for us, we suffered the loss.  We are not worried as we will see them in the district playoffs and eventually in the state playoffs."

The match was scoreless in the first half of play. Toppenish got on the board 15 minutes into the second half of action on a "phantom" goal at the 55 minute-mark to take a 1-0 lead.

The score came off  a corner kick after the ball was being headed back and forth in the goal area. Othello's keeper Martel Saucedo eventually caught the ball and punted it out.

Play continued for a few seconds until the center official blew his whistle and ran over to the assistant referee to see why he was waving his flag.

After talking it over for a few seconds the center official pointed to the center of the field and blew the whistle, which signaled a goal scored.

"I went crazy after that and wanted the ref to give me an explanation and to let me know what was going on.  He immediately ran over to me and warned me to be quite and told me the assistant referee had a better view who said he saw the ball cross the line into the goal," Garza said. "I continued to question the call, but no answers were given. It caught me and the team by surprise. No one on  the field ... not even the Toppenish players ... could believe it as they were also confused on the call. But, naturally once they knew a goal was awarded in their favor, they started celebrating."

Jorge Campos tied the game 1-1 at the 62nd minute of play on a penalty kick. Neither team scored in the last 18 minutes of regulation and the match was sent into overtime.

The first five minute period did not produce a gaol, so the match went to a second overtime.

Two minutes later, the Wildcats Edgar Lopez booted in the game-winner for Toppenish.

"The game was decided on an unfortunate mistake by our keeper," Garza said. "Toppenish took a long shot from about 30 yards out directly to Martel He had the ball in his sights and even kneeled down to corral it, but when it hit the grass inches in front of him the ball just skidded with no bounce right through his legs.  No way would that ever happen in a dry field, but since the field was wet from the constant raining throughout, it did. Martel did get a touch on the ball ... just enough to slow it down a little ... but all he could do is watch it slowly roll in behind him."

Toppenish had 20 shots on frame to Othello's 15. Saucedo had 10 saves for the Huskies. Ricky Mendoza had 13 for the Wildcats.

Othello is back on the pitch today when the team hosts Quincy (4-2) at 6 p.m.
