The woman who died hours after walking away from a car crash on Foothill Road has been identified as Kalispell resident Dawn Wickingstad, 51.

The cause of her death, however, has yet to be determined.

The Montana Highway Patrol estimates Wickingstad crashed her car off Foothill Road at 1 a.m. Saturday.

She then spent the night in her car and at daylight walked to where she could call her mother, who picked her up and took Wickingstad to her Creston-area home at about 9 a.m.

Wickingstad did not seek any medical attention and went to sleep. When her mother checked on her at about 2:30 p.m., Wickingstad was deceased.

“Both the manner and cause of death are under investigation” and an autopsy is being conducted, according to a press release from the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office.
