MISSOULA – The Meidingers are taking the identical twin moniker to a whole new level. A year ago, Rachelle Meidinger set the school record at 34-2 while her sister was sidelined with an injury.
Last week, Aspen Meidinger tied the school record and placed first at the Joe Johnson Invite with Rachelle recovered from a leg injury.
“They shared the record for a day,” Arlee head coach Russ Baker said.
Then at the Seeley-Swan Invitational, Aspen set a new school record with a throw of 34-9 and placed second at the meet. She also qualified for the Top Ten Meet in Missoula with that mark.
“So both of them have had the same experience of watching their twin set the school record,” Baker said.
JIM JOHNSON INVITE
Along with Meidinger’s first-place finish in the shot put there were plenty of great performances by Lake County athletes in the throws. TERS’ Daryl Camel was fifth in the shot put (29-9) while Becca Nelson placed second in the javelin (111-6) and fourth in the discus (93-7).
She was also fourth in the high jump (4-8). Camel placed third in the discus for TERS (94-3). Whitney Malatare leapt to second in the triple jump (30-11) and fourth in the long jump (14-5).
For the boys, Zack Carver tied for first in the 400-meter (54.40) dash, while placing third in the 100-meter (11.66) and fifth in the 200-meter (24.11).
“That’s the first time that Zack has run in the 400 meter,” Arlee head coach Russ Baker said. “He’s coming along and doing pretty good in those short races.”
Sam Nelson placed in multiple events as well, taking second in the javelin (156-0.5), third in the long jump (19-3) and fourth in the triple jump (38-4). Donovan McDonald placed third in the 1,600-meter race(5:03.44). Arlee boys and girls both placed fifth with 13 placings.
SEELEY-SWAN INVITATIONAL
MISSOULA – Becca Nelson highlighted the Seeley-Swan Invite with a personal record and first-place finish in the javelin (126-6).
“That was her farthest throw ever and it qualified her for the Top Ten meet,” Baker said.
Nelson grabbed a pair of fifth-place marks in the discus (101-2.5) and shot put (28-11) to help lead Arlee at the Seeley-Swan Invitational. Also in the throws, Aspen Meidinger was second in the shot put with her school record throw (34-9).
“All of Aspen’s throws were over 34 feet,” Baker said. “She’s getting pretty consistent.”
Whitney Malatare was fifth in the triple jump (30-4.5) For the boys, Zack Carver provided the speed and placed third in the 100-meter dash (11.95) and sixth in the 400-meter dash (54.55).
“Zack actually ran faster at the Seeley- Swan Invite than at the Jim Johnson but placed sixth,” Baker said. Sam Nelson was second in the javelin (15-0) and third in the triple jump (39-8.5).
“Sam is zeroing in on 40 feet,” Baker said. “That 39-8.5 mark was a good jump for him and 40 is what he’s shooting for.”
COMING UP
Baker will be working overtime to get the dir t track at Arlee ready for their upcoming home meet on Thursday. While it will take some extra TLC to get things ready,
“I think the local people like to come down to watch,” Baker, who has to paint and drag the track, said.
Then Arlee will travel to Superior on Saturday.
