MOSES LAKE - The Chiefs got just what the doctor ordered with two shutout wins over the Riverhawks at home Tuesday.
Moses Lake had little resistance from Chiawana as the team won all 14 matches.
Girls
Courtney Kunjara, the Chiefs No. 1 singles picked up her first league win of the season as she defeated Kaitlyn Nelson in two sets 7-5, 6-3.
Moses Lake's No. 2 singles Alyssa Tucker made it two in a row with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Jessica Moss.
Ece Yilmaz, the No. 3 singles downed Roxy Stapleton 6-3, 6-3, and Kylee McKay had an easy time with Ashley Good as she only dropped one game of the two set match, 6-0, 6-1.
The Chiefs doubles teams maintained the mojo with three wins over the Riverhawks.
The No. 1 team of Becca Byam and Annalise Odegaard turned back Julie Campos and Emmy Vaughn 6-4, 6-1.
Dorothy Catey and Carina LeFave, the No. 2 doubles beat Kelsey Toyoda and Amalie Vanela in two sets 6-2, 6-1, and the No. 3 doubles team of Sierra Gallaway and Marki Kieris won with ease over Denise Jara and Alyssa Varela 6-0, 6-1 to complete the shutout.
"This is the first time since I have been around the girls team that we have avoided a losing record," coach Jon Wrigley said. "We should finish tied for third and have been competitive in every league match. It has been a year where we really moved up in level of play."
The strides the team has made this season Wrigley said is credited to the Chiefs captains.
"Becca and Annalise have shown the ability to lead and raise the level of competition," he said. "And Courtney got her first league win today. She made a good run down 2-5 in the first set and never let go of the momentum. She played a real smart match and showed determination."
Boys
The boys teams were just as dominate as the girls as they only lost one set of the 15 played.
The Chiefs No. 1 singles Tyler Knapp had a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over Javin Olin to get things rolling.
Levi Huddleston, the No. 2 singles followed suit with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Manuel Mendoza.
The No. 3 singles Josh Black beat Luiz Mendoza in three sets 6-0, 2-6, 7-6 (7), and Cody Jones, the No. 4 singles turned back Eduardo Quintero in two sets 6-4, 6-1.
Moses Lake's doubles teams had an easy time with their opponents as well, as the first doubles Tiernan Hall and Drew Perez blanked Jared Costanzo and Alejandro Rios 6-0, 6-0.
Jordan Earl and Marco Sanchez the Chiefs No. 2 doubles downed Nick Martin and Erick Rios in two sets 6-1, 6-1, and Nolan Knapp and Matt Schafer the No. 3 doubles team beat Jake Martin and Roman Sholotyck 6-1, 6-3.
"Chiawana is a real young team," Wrigley said. "My boys did a decent job today staying on their opponents. I enjoyed watching Tierrnan and Drew finish strong. They have had trouble keeping up the effort level when they get up on their opponents."
The win lands the boys at 3-3 and in fourth place for the second straight season.
Moses Lake will travel to Spokane to take part in the Inland Empire Tournament Friday and Saturday.
The Chiefs finish the regular season May 5 at Eastmont. The district tournament begins May 12.
