Between 18,500 and 38,400 gallons of treated wastewater was spilled within the boundaries of Heyburn State Park south of Lake Coeur d'Alene on Sunday, according to the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation.

The spill occurred at a treatment facility, located between Plummer Creek and Highway 5.

A cast iron fitting came apart, causing spillage at a spot where treated effluent is pumped up to a storage pond.

The spill volume estimate was based on the size of the line and the duration of the leak, officials said.

No cleanup is needed, as the effluent spread out and the ground absorbed most of it.

The effluent was chlorinated and "was basically clear water," officials said.

After about 90 minutes the leak slowed to about 20 gallons per minute. Within two hours it had stopped.

The line was repaired and back in service within a couple of hours.

The area of impact was contained to storm run-off ditches and an adjacent road.

Follow-up inspections have taken place to ensure all sewer processing and transportation components are functional and that there is no threat to the environment or public safety.

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality has been contacted, is apprised of all findings, and will be given written follow-up information which is customary after this type of incident.

At this time, there is no immediate threat to drinking water supplies.
