PABLO — It makes perfect sense that a new recycling movement would take place right around Earth Day. Thanks to the work of students and faculty at SKC and Mark Nelson, program manager for Lake County Solid Waste District, that became the reality when a pair of massive green recycling containers were opened for use on the college campus, across from the Arlee/Charlo Theatre, on Friday, April 20.

“Our goal is to get the recycling into the communities,” Nelson said.

The bins, purchased through an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant, are the first to be officially unveiled in the area. In the coming days, it’s expected that Ronan will begin use of theirs and, perhaps next week, Polson will follow suit.

The efforts of those involved have been in the works for about a couple years.

SKC president Dr. Luana Ross said several departments, including the environmental science and forestry clubs, as well as Nelson and SKC sustainability director Mary Driscoll, have played critical roles in bringing the recycling movement not just to SKC, but the entire city of Pablo.

“We brought these out for the public to use,” Nelson said. “It’s for the households to use so they don’t have to drive to the transfer station.”

One of the themes not lost on those involved has been sustainability. While it’s a great thing to have created this opportunity for the community, it’s just as important they keep this effort going.

Student Nicole Stiffarm has been instrumental in the process and reinforced that sentiment.

“I’m graduating this year and this has kind of been my baby since I started, so I want to make sure it stays when I’m gone,” Stiffarm said.

“We’re trying to make it more than just going green, but make it a sustainable effort,” Nelson added.

The entire area will have the chance to keep the wheels in motion on the recycling movement when the bins in Ronan and Polson join the ones in Pablo. The bins in Ronan will be located at Harvest Foods while the Polson bins will be available at the skate park.
