SPOKANE - Matt Finney of Lake City beat Kane Wijngaarden of Sandpoint 6-2, 7-6 (2) in the finals Saturday at Mead High to win the title at No. 2 singles at the Inland Empire Tournament for the second year in a row.

Finney, a senior and the No. 1 seed, went 5-0.

"He moved the ball around, varied his pace, moved the ball side to side," Lake City boys coach Tim Scott said.

"It was a good loss," Sandpoint coach Kent Anderson said. "Kane fought him to the end."

In No. 1 boys singles, Luke Ness of Lake City finished second, losing to top-seeded Luke Thompson from Hanford High in Richland, Wash., 6-3, 6-2 in the championship match. Ness went 4-1 in the tourney.

"I thought he played real well," Scott said. "The other kid just had a few more shots."

Lake City's No. 2 girls doubles team of Jenna Cordes and Megan Dibble won in the consolation semifinals 6-0, 7-5 against a team from Gonzaga Prep before losing to a team from Lind-Ritzville 6-3, 7-6 in the championship match at Mt. Spokane High to finish the tournament 3-2.

"They had a great tournament," Lake City girls coach Bob Brunn said. "They got a chance to play some good teams."

Coeur d'Alene's No. 1 girls doubles team of Sonja Jacobson and Lexie Carlsen lost their first match on Friday, but rallied Saturday to beat a team from Richland 6-2, 6-2 to finish fifth.

Kaitlyn McHugh (1-1) and Abbey Steed (1-1) were eliminated in girls singles on Friday for Coeur d'Alene.

"We were really excited about the consolation championship," Coeur d'Alene girls coach Laura Taylor said. "They had a really good effort and looked great this weekend. They're headed in the right direction."

Sandpoint's Alex Hon and Carson Nygren staged a dramatic comeback to win the No. 3 boys doubles championship.

The duo lost the first set, and trailed 4-0 in the second set before turning the tide and rallying for an improbable three-set win, the first Inland Empire championship that Anderson could remember a Sandpoint team winning.

"It was probably the most spectacular comeback I've ever seen," said Anderson. "They came back and fought off three match points and won the second set in the tie-breaker, then won 6-2 in the third set."

Megan Rockwell lost a two-hour marathon in the consolation championship at No. 2 girls singles, and Lilly Hawkins and Pilar Herrera lost in the semis of the consolation finals to round out the Bulldogs playing on Saturday.

Lake City plays at Sandpoint on Monday. Coeur d'Alene is home vs. Post Falls on Wednesday.
