Golf

Jason Dufner beat Ernie Els with a birdie on the second hole of a playoff Sunday in the Zurich Classic in Avondale, La., to win for the first time in 164 starts on the PGA Tour.

After entering the fourth round with a two-shot lead, Dufner shot a 2-under 70 at TPC Louisiana. Els had a 67 to match Dufner at 19-under 269.

After both players missed birdie putts within 8 feet on the par-5 18th, they went back to the 18th tee for the second extra hole, which Dufner won by hitting the green in two strokes and tapping home a short birdie putt after Els' birdie attempt from the fringe narrowly missed.

• Stacy Lewis won the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic in Mobile, Ala., for her second LPGA Tour title, holding off hard-charging teen Lexi Thompson by a stroke.

Baseball

• AMERICAN LEAGUE

Yankees 6, Tigers 2: CC Sabathia steadied New York's rocky rotation with eight sharp innings and host New York beat Detroit.

Indians 4, Angels 0: Derek Lowe pitched three-hit ball into the eighth inning and host Cleveland scored three runs on errors by Los Angeles in shutting out the Angels.

White Sox 4, Red Sox 1: Gavin Floyd carried a no-hitter into the seventh, Adam Dunn hit a two-run homer and host Chicago snapped a five-game losing streak by beating Boston.

Orioles 5, Athletics 2: Wilson Betemit hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to lift host Baltimore past Oakland.

Earlier Sunday, third baseman Brandon Inge agreed to sign with the Athletics.

Twins 7, Royals 4: At Minneapolis, Josh Willingham had three hits and Minnesota snapped a six-game losing streak by beating Kansas City.

Rays 5, Rangers 2: At Arlington, Texas, David Price earned his fourth victory in five starts to lead Tampa Bay past Texas.

• NATIONAL LEAGUE

Dodgers 2, Nationals 0: Chris Capuano struck out nine while combining with two relievers on a four-hitter, helping host Los Angeles shut out Washington.

Cubs 5, Phillies 1: Matt Garza pitched one-hit ball for seven shutout innings and struck out 10 to lead Chicago at Philadelphia.

Brewers 3, Cardinals 2: Zack Greinke worked six strong innings and Jonathan Lucroy's two-run double capped a three-run sixth to lead Milwaukee at St. Louis.

Braves 4, Pirates 3: Tim Hudson labored through five tough innings to win in his return from back surgery and host Atlanta beat Pittsburgh.

Diamondbacks 8, Marlins 4: Wade Miley held host Miami hitless until the sixth inning to lead Arizona past Florida.

Mets 6, Rockies 5, 11 inn.: At Denver, Ike Davis singled in the go-ahead run in the 11th to lift New York past Colorado.

Giants 4, Padres 1: Pablo Sandoval homered to back Madison Bumgarner's fourth straight victory helping host San Francisco beat San Diego.

Reds 6, Astros 5: Jay Bruce's fourth home run in four games lifted host Cincinnati over Houston.

Tennis

Rafael Nadal became the first player in the Open Era to win two tournaments seven times after beating David Ferrer 7-6 (1), 7-5 in the Barcelona Open final in Barcelona, Spain.

• Second-ranked Maria Sharapova cruised past world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 6-4 in Stuttgart, Germany, to win the Porsche Grand Prix.

Auto racing

Mike Neff gave John Force Racing its sixth straight Funny Car victory to open the season, beating Ron Capps in the final of the NHRA Spring Nationals in Baytown, Texas.

Morgan Lucas won in Top Fuel, Vincent Nobile topped the Pro Stock field, and Andrew Hines won in Pro Stock Motorcycle.

Yacht racing

Authorities found three sailors dead near Ensenada, Mexico, after their racing yacht apparently collided with a larger vessel.

The crewmembers were taking part in a 124-miler race that began Friday from Newport Beach, Calif. to Ensenada.
