COEUR d'ALENE - A man and his service dog were attacked by two pit bulls Monday as he strolled along the north side of the Spokane River near the south end of Atlas Road.

Joey R. Boyle was bit on the upper arm and twice on the ankle by a female pit bull, and his service dog was attacked by a male pit bull, according to a Kootenai County Sheriff's Department report.

He was treated and taken to Kootenai Medical Center, as was his dog. He was taken to the hospital after the bites aggravated an existing medical condition, the report said.

He said the two pit bulls were with a man and woman driving a "purple colored, Japanese model van," the report said.

Maj. Ben Wolfinger said authorities didn't have further information Wednesday.

Boyle described the woman as heavy set, approximately 5 foot 6 inches tall, with long black hair.

The man was skinny, with lots of tattoos, standing approximately 5 foot 11 inches tall, with short dark hair.

Boyle said he saw the male pit bull near the couple and shouted to them, "Hey, I got a dog down here."

As soon as he yelled, he told deputies, the female pit bull, which he hadn't noticed yet, was on him. Then the male pit bull attack his leashed service dog.

The man and woman said the female had just had puppies. Boyle said they retrieved the dogs and left.

The female pit bull was described as tan in color, and the male was brindle, Boyle told deputies. Both had medium builds, he said.
