With the beginning of August our weather has been the best in the lower 48 states. The water level on Potholes Reservoir is at 1,037 ft. which is about 9 feet low, which is providing many more sand dunes and beaches for the summer fun in the sun. Bass & Walleye Fishing continues to provide action for anglers with some doing better than others.
Spinnerbaits, BuzzBaits, Floating Rapala's, Spro Frogs and Yamamoto Senkos and many other soft plastics have been producing good bass action on Potholes with warm water temperatures flirting with the 80 F mark.
Walleye continue to be located near the weedlines or matted vegetation sheltering small perch and crappie. Successful Walleye anglers are struggling to find fish under the 22" keeper mark. One family released multiple Walleye over 23" inches before they landed a 32" monster.
Rob the storekeeper at MarDon found abundant perch along Big Dune and the west arm of the sand dunes trolling a Mustad slow death hook with a nightcrawler producing great perch action from 5-10" in length.
Trolling Luhr-Jensen Baby Hot Lips or DC-13 around 2 mph had a group of five land a collection of 20 Rainbow Trout up to 5lbs. on July 31st, 2012 trolling in 40 feet of water out front of Frenchman's Wasteway.
The MarDon Fishing Dock is providing improved bluegill action this week. Crappie and Perch action has been fair with the occasional big Rainbow Trout and Smallmouth Bass taken at the Dock.
Crawdad fishing has been excellent on the reservoir, we sell great crawdad traps at the MarDon Resort Tackle Shop. The Seep Lakes below the O'Sullivan Dam also are packed with crawdads.
