The Coeur d'Alene Youth Triathlon won't happen this year, confirmed a Boys and Girls Club official on Monday.

The nonprofit, which had just taken over the popular event this year, decided to take 2012 off and revamp the triathlon next year, said Executive Director Ryan Davis.

"This year it was in the midst of all the programs we had going on," Davis said. "We evaluated it, wanted to make sure we came back big for next year. Once we got ahold of all the volunteers, we determined it was in everybody's best interest to kick off bigger and bolder next year."

This would have been the 21st annual Coeur d'Alene Youth Triathlon, always held the same weekend as the adult race.

The children's event had garnered as many as 400 kids from 5 to 14 years old.

The race was turned over to the Boys and Girls Club when the previous race coordinator, Eydie Kendall, moved.

Davis, who shadowed the coordinator last year to groom for the transition, said the event seemed like a good fit for the nonprofit.

"We look at those (events) as opportunities for kids," Davis said. "Just to continue our mission."

Kendall, who now lives in Pocatello, said she had tapped Davis to take over because of his organizational skills.

She trusts him to make the right decision for the children's safety, she said.

"I think there will be people who are disappointed, but I think parents have to understand it's a huge endeavor," Kendall said. "It's like a full-time job."

She recalled the stress of recruiting and organizing an army of volunteers, and the struggle of organizing an event with no commercial backing.

"We had a lot of directors for every event, the run, the bike, the swim, and they put in a ton of work, too," she said.

What's important for the Boys and Girls Club is to pick its priorities and carry them out well, Kendall said.

She does hope the nonprofit brings the event back next year, she added.

"It's a fun event," she said. "There's no reason not to."
