Now the water level on Potholes Reservoir is just right for anglers and watersports enthusiasts at 1,035.7 feet, or 10 feet below full pool. The water temperatures in the "Sand Dunes" are reaching above the 80F mark and the topwater bass fishing is on! Get your topwater ready for some dog days of summer fishing! Frogs and Buzzbaits are working in the Sand Dunes and Floating Rapala's are working wonders along the face of the dam with a 50 Smallmouth day easily possible. Smallmouths pushing 5lbs. are available along the dam and the rockpiles adjacent to them. WDFW Biologists recommend catching and keeping shorter Smallmouth Bass from Potholes Reservoir. Each angler may take 10 Smallmouth Bass with only one over 14".

Trout fishing here on Potholes Reservoir has been the best in years, both in size of fish and the numbers. Trolling diving plugs such as the Luhr-Jensen Baby Hot Lips, Warden DC13 and Rapala Shad Raps around the State Park area have been producing great fishing outings. We are seeing rainbows in the 3-6 lb. range as commonplace, and they are not your Daddy's Trout, they are definitely hard fighters like their cousins the Steelhead. You can focus on the 20-40 foot depth zone and troll from 1.5-3 mph to catch these hard charging Rainbows.

The MarDon Resort Fishing Dock is full of young of the year fish including Perch, Bluegill, Bullheads, Smallmouth & Largemouth Bass, Trout and a few Crappie even as well! Fishing for the general public not staying at the resort is available and its only $7 for adults and $4 for Children & Seniors, under 12 years old must wear a life jacket. Hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Dove season begins Sept. 1st and Royal Slope has amazing amounts of Doves. It is a great primer for your eyes and shooting skills for the upcoming waterfowl season and will give your dog a good workout. The season runs from Sept. 1 to Sept. 30 and the Royal City Schools Boosters are selling access passes for prime hunting land and opportunities. Contact MarDon Resort at (509) 346-2651 to buy passes.

Waterfowl hunting continues to be tough with stagnant air which builds fog. Additionally, with our unseasonably warm weather temperatures every pond or secret hole is now completely free of ice with mostly open water. These conditions are perfect to jump shoot Northern Mallards and lazy Canadian Honkers. Central Washington is covered with waterfowl from the North. As soon as our temperatures drop below freezing around the clock and we get a little wind, the big water will harbor vast numbers of quality ducks and geese.
