COEUR d'ALENE - "Oklahoma!" is right around the corner.

So this weekend, the Lake City Playhouse leaders and some volunteers spruced the place up for the start of the season.

Lots of weeds got pulled or trimmed in the parking area and around the back of the building, located at 1320 E. Garden Ave.

"We couldn't even see that fence over there," said Deb Cofield, a member of the Playhouse's board of directors.

The back of the Playhouse got a much-needed new coat of paint.

"I think the neighbors will appreciate the effort," she said.

New vinyl siding was added in front and on the sides this year, but the old cedar-shake siding in back remained in place and was looking shabby.

"We just couldn't let this go for another year, it was just too ugly," Cofield said.

So, Bill Masella, another member of the board of directors, added a few new pieces of cedar-shake siding and painted the back to match the color of the front and sides.

"We needed to make sure it at least had a consistent look and feel," Masella said.

There wasn't enough funding to install vinyl all around the building.

"Our budget wouldn't allow it, and this is where it ran out," Cofield said, standing in the alley in back.

The inside of the Playhouse got a major cleaning too, including the kitchen, front concession area, windows, bathrooms and green room.

"If it was carpeted, it got shampooed. If it was flooring it got mopped," Cofield said. "Even the auditorium got mopped."

Masella said about 15 volunteers showed up to help during the weekend.

"Everybody else is at the lake," he joked.

Domino's Pizza delivered free pizzas, and somebody else had the foresight to deliver cold beers for the sweating workers.

"It's amazing how refreshing that was" in the blazing summer heat, Cofield said.
