Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 12 years, 5 months AGO
After coming up short in their debuts in the King of the Cage mixed martial arts promotion's first visit to the Coeur d'Alene Casino and Hotel in May, Jordan Cook and Will Noland will attempt to make names for themselves once again.
Both fighters from Trevor Prangley's American Kickboxing Academy are among the list of fighters scheduled to compete in Thursday's "Breaking Point" event in Worley.
In the main event, Prangley will fight Mike "The Animal" Cook in a three-round bout in the heavyweight (225 pounds) division. Doors open at 6 p.m., with fights at 7.
JORDAN COOK had his first bout stopped by the referee after being knocked out by Jacob Harkness.
"I've just been approaching my training a lot different," said Cook, who wrestled at Coeur d'Alene High. "I've been trying some new tactics. I've been approaching my training a lot harder."
Noland's opponent Thursday - George Stork - lost by a choke hold in the third round to Prangley in May.
"Just the intensity level has picked up," said Noland, of Post Falls. "The camp was a little longer this time and I feel more prepared. You're going to see a war with me. I'm going to bring it. I always bring it and you're going to stand up and punch me in the face. I just saw he's really tough and can take a lot of shots. I'm prepared to go all three rounds. I'm ready for a war."
As far as nerves, Noland added he won't feel any until Thursday.
"I usually don't get nervous until I'm in the back. Usually once I get there, I think about what went wrong in my life, and why I'm here," Noland said with a chuckle.
For Cook, who faces Brett Boksa at 145 pounds, his goal is simple - finish quickly.
"I'm just going in and want to work fast," said Cook, sporting a purple hairdo these days. "I know my cardio is in better shape than his. I want to take him to the ground and turn it into a jiu-jitsu match."
"Both of them learned a valuable lesson the last time," Prangley said.
“They just learned how hard to train,” Prangley said. “As a coach, you can only tell them so much. You’d rather have them win, but you’ve got to learn something from it. As a coach, it’s hard to watch them lose, but both have changed their performance.”
PRANGLEY WAS originally scheduled to fight Brandon Anderson, but a illness in Anderson’s family forced him to pull out of the match.
“He’s a last-minute replacement,” Prangley said of Mike Cook. “But he stepped up and took the fight. He’s a tough guy and I can’t afford to let him get going. You need to shut him down early, or you’re in for a long, long fight.”
Prangley, who also wrestled at North Idaho College, caught a virus bug in India before his match with Stork and added he was at 30 to 40 percent for May’s bout.
“I feel like I’m healthy now,” Prangley said. “We’ll see once the day comes, but I don’t have any problems right now and my training has been good so far. I think it will be a good fight and a good show overall.”
At 40 years old, Prangley is still enjoying the sport.
“I’m just trying to enjoy the final couple years of my career,” Prangley said. “I’ll head back to India in five weeks. If I win that, I could be in line for another fight to get a title shot. You just never know in this sport. I’ve had ups and downs in this sport at least four times, but have built it back up again. This is a hard sport to quit.”
OTHER FIGHTS include: Lee Morrison vs. Drew Brokenshire; Zach Lari vs. Brandon Steadman; Jacob Harkness vs. Sam Carney; Josh Rettinghouse vs. Joseph Cleveland; Jake Lindell vs. Trevor Robb; Tanner Weisgram vs. Forrester Seip and Jed Allen vs. Alan Nicolauson.
Tickets are still available in the general admission sections. May’s MMA card drew a sold-out crowd estimated at 1,500.
“I think we’re going to be here a while,” Prangley said. “If we keep putting on good shows and selling tickets — I really think this is going to be huge here. I think those that come are going to get a feeling they saw some good fights for 20 bucks.”
