YOUTH SPORTS: Basketball camp news, soccer results

AAU BASKETBALL

Stars camp: Weekly basketball skills camps offered by the Spokane Stars AAU girls basketball program begin Sunday, Sept. 9 at The Fitness Center, 14210 E. Sprague in Spokane Valley.

Level 1 players (K-4th grade) will meet from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each Sunday. Level 2 (grades 5-7) players will meet from 12:30 to 2 p.m., and Level 3 (grades 8-12) players meet from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

A total of 13 camps will be offered during the fall, with the final one scheduled for Dec. 9.

Cost is $20 per session.

Players from Whitworth, Eastern Washington, Gonzaga and Washington State will help coach at the camp at least once during the fall.

SELECT SOCCER

Thunder wins: The Idaho Thunder under-11 boys (Halseth) went 5-0 and outscored their opponents 37-5 in winning their division at the Northwest Cup last weekend in Spokane.

Jalen Skalskiy had two hat tricks during the tournament, and Gavin Mcluskie and Cameron Callabretto had one each. Ben Blakely and Alex McCabe had assists, and Jadyn Freeman, Tristan Delbridge, Max Smith and Seth Neely keyed a defense which posted two shutouts.

Coeur d'Alene Sting U12 boys (Ajax): The Sting went 2-1-1 at the Northwest Cup in Spokane last weekend.

The Sting tied the SSC Shadow (Boo) 1-1 on Friday. Ryan Bergsieker scored for the Sting.

On Saturday the Sting beat ASU-BU 3-0. Greyden Lee scored two goals, Cameron Johnson one. John Rayborn had one assist and Jason Luke had two saves in posting the shutout in goal.

The Sting lost 4-0 to the Sabers (Rau), then bounced back with a 4-1 victory over the Breakers Derbybreakers in the consolation game. Greyden Lee had a hat trick, and Josh Schiger scored the other goal. Lee and Ryan Bergsieker each had one assist and Jason Luke had two great saves en route to the shutout.

JV SOCCER

Viking boys open with win: Pete Rau scored the go-ahead goal in the second half, assisted by Andrew Nickolay, as Coeur d'Alene beat Sandpoint 2-1 in its season opener Saturday.

The Vikings scored first on a header by Kenny Brown, assisted by Lucas Garman. Sandpoint tied the match with a goal in the second half.

Garrett Boyce had 10 saves for the Vikings.
