Cd'A Summer Theatre announces 2013 shows
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 12 years, 5 months AGO
Next summer, Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre audiences will join Huckleberry Finn and escaped slave, Jim, in their grand adventures and daring escapades on the mighty Mississippi in the Tony Award-winning epic "Big River."
They'll laugh and cheer for Violet, Judy and Doralee as the three scheme to get even with their sexist and egotistical boss in "9 to 5: The Musical."
And then, it's off to River City, Iowa, for the beloved musical theater classic, "The Music Man."
A fourth show, which also promises to be a crowd-pleaser, will be announced later this year.
"We work very hard to put together a well-rounded season," said Roger Welch, CST artistic director. "It's such a complicated process, but I think we've really got something for everyone in our 2013 lineup."
Big River
Composer and Lyricist: Roger Miller
Approved for all audiences, this is a premier for CST.
Synopsis: Based on Mark Twain's novel, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." Although trying to stay "respectable," Huckleberry Finn runs into trouble when his drunken father returns to town. Huck is forced to fake his own death to escape, and joins up with another on the run: Jim, a slave in search of freedom. As they head down the Mississippi River, they get pulled into a scam involving two "aristocrats," one of which lands Jim in chains again. Huck joins up with Tom Sawyer to try to free him.
9 to 5: The Musical
Music and Lyrics: Dolly Parton
Book by Patricia Resnick
Rated PG, this is a CST premier.
Synopsis: Based on the 1980 hit movie. Pushed to the boiling point, three female co-workers concoct a plan to get even with their boss, a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot. They conspire to take control of the company, and learn there's nothing they can't do - even in a "man's world." Set in the late 1970s, 9 to 5: The Musical is a hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the rolodex era. Outrageous, thought-provoking, and even a little romantic, it's about teaming up and taking care of business.
The Music Man
Composer and Lyricist: Meredith Willson
Approved for all audiences, CST last performed this play in 1993.
Synopsis: With his fast-talking style, "Professor" Harold Hill convinces the parents of River City to invest in band uniforms and musical instruments for their youngsters. But chaos ensues as Hill's credentials are questioned, and he's called upon to prove himself to the citizens of River City.
