COEUR d'ALENE - The Peak Health and Wellness Center in Coeur d'Alene is getting $700,000 in remodeling and updates in the next couple months.
This will be the first major remodel work in 30 years to the club facility, located at 940 Ironwood Drive. A grand reopening will take place in 60 to 90 days.
The work will include an expanded lounge area, updated conference room, a repositioning of the front desk, improvements to the pool area, and major updates to the men's locker room.
"We just want the members to be more comfortable," said Gary Retter, owner and manager of the club. "We do little updates all the time, but this is a major one."
He said business has been good at the club, and construction costs are low.
Forest Contracting Inc., of Maple Valley, Wash., specializes in remodels and is the project's general contractor, Retter said. The subcontractors will be local.
Jeff Nagel, of Seattle, designed the remodel.
"He's done a lot of clubs," Retter said. "He's somebody we've known for 30 years."
The men's locker room is being remodeled first, and is scheduled to be completed in 30 days.
The original oak lockers, in place and in use for the past 30 years, will be re-configured and refinished.
"They'll look brand new," he said.
The locker room will get new flooring, showers, bathrooms, Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna.
The women's locker room was updated about eight years ago.
"I think the updated men's locker room will be appealing to a lot of the new members," he said.
He said Peak plans to offer new-member specials once the work is completed.
The pool room will receive a new exhaust system, which will pump four to five times more fresh air through it, he said.
The pool will be drained and repainted, he said. The tile floor will be cleaned and new grout will be applied.
"We'll tear out the back wall and put in a whole new back wall," he said.
The women's only workout area will be torn down, allowing for the lounge to be relocated and expanded.
"A lot of people hang out here," he said. "Our juice bar and lounge will be better. It will be more of a gathering place for members to be."
The check-in desk will be moved to just inside the main entrance, he said. That will give the club more control of client check-in.
Because of the rearrangement, the Pilates studio also will be expanded.
