PREP ROUNDUP: Lakeside captures North Star tourney

WALLACE - Brenna Pirozok had five kills and Avery Brown-Sonder 15 assists as the Lakeside Knights defeated the Mullan Tigers 28-26, 15-25, 15-10 in the championship match of the season-opening North Star League tournament at Wallace High.
In round-robin pool play, Lakeside beat Wallace 25-14, 25-12 and Clark Fork 25-23, 25-20, and split with Kootenai 19-25, 25-16 before losing to Mullan 25-17, 25-17.
"We kind of got tired in that third set (of the championship match)," Lakeside coach Jan Mitchell said. "But I felt like they played really well late in the game."
On the day, Ruth Haynes had 19 blocks, Brown-Sonder 56 assists for Lakeside, which travels to Coeur d'Alene Charter on Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic School.
Mullan split with Kootenai 25-19, 25-27 and Wallace 25-23, 19-25 and beat Clark Fork 28-26, 25-23 to advance to the championship round.
Kootenai beat Wallace 25-19, 25-18 and lost to Clark Fork 25-21, 25-14 in their other pool play games.
Brie Benson had 20 kills and 29 serve points and Lacey Goodson 31 serve points and Kaley Carman 10 kills for Kootenai, which travels to Lakeside on Sept. 4.
"I thought we played pretty well," Kootenai coach Jessica Hammond said. "We put some things together today. For it being their first varsity matches, I thought Kaley and Lacey stepped up and did a good job."
St. Maries fourth at Lewiston Invitational
LEWISTON - Mariah Gladden had 44 kills and 14 blocks on the day as the St. Maries Lumberjacks finished fourth in the season-opening Lewiston Invitational at Booth Hall.
"I thought we did well over the day," St. Maries coach Missy Asbury said. "We started out a little rusty, which I expected."
Kristina Halverson had 27 digs, Kathy Epler 91 assists, Maddi McQueen 26 digs and Lakin Anxo 20 kills for St. Maries, which hosts Priest River on Tuesday.
In the opening round of tournament play, St. Maries lost to Lewiston 25-15, 22-25, 15-9 and fell in a third-fourth place match to Troy 27-25, 22-25, 15-6.
"Our goal was to improve throughout the day," Asbury said. "I'm comfortable with the outcome of the tournament. We played hard and it was a learning experience."
In pool play, St. Maries lost to Troy 25-23, 25-23 before beating the Lewiston junior varsity 28-26, 25-9 and Moscow 14-25, 25-19, 15-11.

RATHDRUM - Timmy Mueller scored two second-half goals as the Trojans beat the Hawks in a nonleague game at Lakeland Rotary Field.
"Post Falls is looking really, really good," Lakeland coach Andrew Craig said. "They're a solid team and really deep on and off the bench. They're going to be a force to be reckoned with."
Nathan White had a goal and assist for Post Falls (3-0-0), which hosts Sandpoint on Tuesday.
Cade Coffey had 10 saves for Lakeland (1-2-0), which hosts Lake City on Thursday.
"This was a good test for us," Craig said. "We were able to keep the score low and really started to work on our defense and connecting on passes."

COEUR d'ALENE - Four players scored goals for the Timberwolves in a nonleague win over the Cougars of Kalispell at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.
"We came out and played hard," Lake City coach Chad Beadell said. "We just couldn't put anything in the back of the net. Our guys played hard and we had some great combinations on the field, but just couldn't finish like we'd like to."
Kenny Randall and Christian Guzman scored in the first half and Alec Johnson and Alec Maldonado scored in the second for Lake City (1-1-0), which hosts Moscow on Wednesday.

Cody Posselt had seven saves for St. Maries (1-1-0), which travels to Priest River on Tuesday.

Maria Schnepf scored in the 38th minute for Lakeland (2-1-0), which travels to Bonners Ferry on Monday.
"Lakeland came in really strong," Post Falls coach Briggs Anderson said. "We made some adjustments in the second half and just went for broke up top with Kelcie."

"We started really well, then had some trouble defensively," Coeur d'Alene Charter coach David Baxter said. "Katie's goal gave us some confidence and we responded with great effort and it was an exciting game to the final minute."

POST FALLS - Coeur d'Alene's Michael Dunton (17 minutes, 21 seconds) and Josie Brown (20:16) won their respective races in the season-opening Post Falls Invitational at Post Falls High.
Coeur d'Alene had the top four finishers in the girls race, and the top three in the boys race.

MOSCOW - Junior quarterback Wyatt Sadler ran for 200 yards and junior defensive lineman Hunter Kotschevar had 15 tackles and four sacks as the Tigers beat the Spartans from Weippe in the nonleague opener for both schools at the Kibbie Dome.
"It was a hard-fought battle," second-year Mullan coach Stetson Spooner said. "It was a very cool experience for the kids to get a chance to play in the Kibbie Dome. My assistant coach (Dan Fritz) and I were kind of discouraged by the way we played in the first half, but the kids fought back in the second half and we couldn't be happier with how we battled back."
Tyler Henderson ran for 100 yards and Tyler Lavero had 150 all-purpose yards for Mullan, which travels to Clark Fork on Friday.
