Glacier golfers dominate at home
Joseph TERRY<br>The Daily Inter Lake | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 12 years, 4 months AGO
In a close contest entering the final round of the Glacier Invitational at Big Mountain Golf Club, Glacier’s Ryan Porch pulled away from the field, shooting a 5-under-par 67 to beat teammate Logan Iverson and Flathead’s Ryan Keenan by 11 strokes on Tuesday.
“I don’t think I left too many out there,” Porch said. “I was really happy with the way I played. I putted really well, I know this golf course. I know every place to go and not to go. I know all the greens so it was definitely an advantage.”
The advantage played well for the Wolfpack, which swept both the boys and girls titles at its host tournament. Iverson finished in second for the boys with a two-day total of 149, while both Dillon Eaves and Kevin Talcott finished with 158s in eighth place. The team total of 603 was 42 strokes better than second-place Missoula Hellgate.
Porch, who carded his second tournament win in three tries this season, said he started to spread his lead after a birdie on the par-3 13th.
“I was five up through nine (holes),” Porch said. “I had a comfortable lead, but it wasn’t certain I was going to win. (Iverson) was definitely there.”
Porch and Iverson have finished in first and second overall in all three tournaments this season.
Flathead’s Varsity B team passed the A team on Tuesday, led by the strong play of Keenan. The freshman caught Iverson to tie for second place with a 73 in the second round. Hayden Congdon led Polson, shooting 166.
On the girls side, Glacier freshman Teigan Avery continued her strong start to the season. Avery shot 76 in both rounds, finishing with a 152, 18 strokes ahead of teammates Shea Stevens and Hannah Davis in second place. This is the second tournament she has won this season.
“I didn’t get in too much trouble,” Avery said. “That’s where it’s at, reducing the risk.”
Polson finished second as a team, led by a fifth place finish from Nicole Clairmont, who shot 174. Flathead finished in fourth. Morgan Knutsen led the Bravettes with an eighth-place finish and a two-day total of 186.
The tournament win is the second in a row for the Wolfpack girls, who have looked like one of the best groups in the state this season.
“We’ve been working so hard,” senior Shea Stevens said. “It’s really fun to see where our girls are at and how far we’ve come ... We’re really looking forward to it, hoping we can only improve, only get better by the time state rolls around.”
