Manhunt ends

Kidnapping and shooting suspect Mitchell Walck was arrested on Wednesday morning in Bismarck, N.D., after he was found hiding in a semi at a truck stop.
"We're glad that this case came to a conclusion without anybody getting hurt," said Kootenai County Sheriff's Office Lt. Stu Miller. "I knew it would only be a matter of time before he'd be involved in some other illegal activity."
Walck is a 57-year-old transient suspected of firing at an Idaho State Police trooper after a vehicle chase, and later kidnapping Susan Smith, 62, Rathdrum, early Saturday. Walck dropped Smith off unharmed at a grocery story in Glendive, Mont., on Sunday.
Walck's arrest concludes a multi-state manhunt that involved the FBI and a $1 million warrant.
Bismarck Police were called to the Oasis Truck Stop after a 34-year-old Solen, N.D., man returned to his truck and found Walck inside.
"The victim reported that while the semi truck was parked unattended a male had entered his truck and was in the sleeper cab," a KCSO press release states.
Walck threatened the victim with a handgun and then fled on foot into a nearby mobile home park, according to Bismarck Police.
"As police arrived, a witness was able to direct officers to the area Walck was last seen," a Bismarck press release states.
Bismarck Sgt. Mark Buschena said Walck was taken into custody without incident.
"A perimeter was set up and Walck was found hiding under a pine tree," Buschena said.
Walck had a 9mm handgun in his waistband at the time of his arrest.
Bismarck is 196 miles east from Glendive. Smith has since returned to Idaho.
Smith and her family declined requests for interviews.
"She said that she and her family are private people and that they'd rather not be contacted," Miller said.
Police recovered Smith's 2005 Silver Subaru Forester in a nearby parking lot in Bismarck. Walck allegedly kidnapped Smith at gunpoint at her Rathdrum area home after a vehicle chase on Saturday.
Smith told investigators Walck ordered her in her home at gunpoint on Saturday when she was letting her cat outside. He shaved his beard, ate and showered at the home before taking off with Smith eastbound at dark. He told her he planned to travel back to western Montana where he had hidden a travel trailer.
The two traveled into North Dakota before turning back to Glendive, investigators say. Walck apparently wanted to travel in as many states as possible to make it a federal crime.
Walck led multiple Idaho agencies on a 30-minute chase after he failed to stop for an alleged traffic violation on Highway 41 south of Spirit Lake late Friday night. The chase ended in Rathdrum near Smith's home at the base of Rathdrum Mountain, but Walck escaped a 12-hour search that included a perimeter and helicopter.
After the vehicle chase ended at a dead-end street, an Idaho State Police trooper was allegedly shot at by Walck, but was unharmed. Walck then fled into the woods. A Chevy Silverado stolen in July out of Idaho Falls was recovered.
In addition to the handgun Walck allegedly used to fire upon the trooper and kidnap Smith, he's also suspected of stealing a 30-30 Winchester rifle and a Mossberg .22-caliber rifle from Smith's home.
Walck, also known as Mark Mackenzie, has no known ties to Kootenai County, police say. He was known to frequent areas such as Priest River and Clark Fork and multiple cities in western Montana.
Walck's violent criminal history includes simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct in Pennsylvania in 1997. He also was involved in a standoff in Montana and attacked a deputy while in the Powell County (Mont.) Jail in 2001. He served 10 years in prison for that before being recently released.
