DIXON — A Thursday night home invasion near Dixon has left one person dead and another in critical condition.

A suspect is in custody for the attack on a couple who worked at Two Eagle River School.

Sanders County Sheriff Tom Rummel said in a news release that deputies from Sanders County, Lake County and Tribal Law and Order responded to the scene of the crime shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday.

Dixon is a small community along the border of Sanders and Lake counties.

Law officers arrested Nathan Leewilliam Calvert at the scene, but they would not comment on any details of the crimes.

Harley Hettick, a Dixon resident and friend of the victims, identified them as Doug and Cheryl Morigeau.

Hettick said a knife was used in the attack and that Doug Morigeau had been killed while Cheryl Morigeau was flown to Seattle for emergency treatment.

“Those were wonderful people,” Hettick said of the Morigeaus. “They were well thought-of by everybody.”

Hettick did not know whether the suspect had any connection to the victims.

“It makes everyone kind of paranoid,” Hettick said.

Both victims were staff members at Two Eagle River School in Pablo.

Classes at the school have been canceled on Monday “for students to mourn the death of a staff member,” according to Rob McDonald, Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes communications director.

Calvert is being held in the Sanders County Jail; the investigation is continuing.

Calvert has a criminal record and is on probation from a 2010 domestic assault in Missoula. He is listed on the Montana Department of Corrections website of violent offenders.
