COEUR d'ALENE - In 26 years, City Clerk Susan Weathers has administrated 542 oaths and read 1,427 ordinance titles as part of her duties during the 1,053 City Council meetings she recorded.

A thousand council meetings accounts for 2,527 minutes of all things city.

Documenting those meetings?

It spreads out over 5,343 pages.

And during those hours there may have been a snicker, smirk, eye roll or sigh while Weathers documented everything, interesting or otherwise.

"The expression on your face has saved me more times than not," said Mayor Sandi Bloem, who admitted she snuck a glance at Weathers during council meetings a time to two to gauge the clerk's reaction on the topic of any given Tuesday night. "You'll be dearly missed."

Twenty-six years is 20 percent of the city's municipal existence, Deputy City Administrator Jon Ingalls pointed out during an open house celebration of Weathers' retirement Friday. And every step of the way she has been the "consummate professional," he said.

Around 75 people showed up for the sendoff, from first responders to council members. Weathers thanked the city, which she called one big family. And to clarify, Weathers was the mother bear of the family, keeping things in meticulous order. If they weren't, she was allowed to scold, just like a mother bear, but nobody else could.

"Don't you dare," she said.

Weathers remembers those council meetings well, where there may have been a face or two but she wasn't allowed to really say anything, except to read aloud more than 1,400 ordinances and 500 some oaths.

"I'm usually not allowed to speak, at least not at council meetings," Weathers said during her farewell speech. "It's flown by, and it is a family."

She had help, she said, keeping thousands upon thousands of pages of city government in order.

"It was always my staff that made me look so good," she said. "I appreciate every one of you."
