COEUR d'ALENE - Jake Mason (165 pounds), Brock Banta (125) and Michael Rodriguez (133) won by pin on Saturday as the North Idaho College Cardinals wrestling team, ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA, beat the third-ranked Clackamas Cougars 33-15 in their second dual of the day Saturday at Christianson Gymnasium.

Earlier, NIC beat Southwestern Oregon 35-6 and enters the holiday break with a 6-1 record in dual matches.

"I think they saved their best match for last," NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. "It just wrapped up a good week. We talked about this was going to be the taste that's going to be in our mouths for break, and I was happy with our guys."

Against Southwestern Oregon of Coos Bay, Nicholas Moreno (157), Kyle Sweedman (174) and Jeremy Golding (149) won by major decision for the Cardinals in a 35-6 win.

"It started with Northwest (on Friday) and the guys kept it going," Whitcomb said. "We needed it and it was a good weekend."

NIC doesn't wrestle again until Jan. 12, when the Cardinals face Great Falls in Missoula.

"Everything wrapped up really well today," said Whitcomb of the fall semester. "Not having our full complement of guys and the loss to Great Falls (Oct. 25), we could make excuses, but it's still a loss. It's just nice to have the team in and we'll add V.J. (Guilio, at 197) in the second semester. I'm glad we got the sickness and injuries out of the way now and hopefully it's smooth sailing from here on out."
