COEUR d'ALENE - If Van Gogh had worked in cardboard and scrap paper we now know how his famous "Sunflowers" might have looked.

An exhibit in the Parkside Gallery on the lower level of the Coeur d'Alene Public Library - 702 E. Front Ave. - through December features artwork created by fifth-graders at the Sorensen Magnet School of the Arts and Humanities.

"G-art-bage! One Person's Trash is Another's Art" reimagines famous paintings using recycled materials.

The project was funded through a grant provided by the EXCEL Foundation. As part of a science unit focusing on natural resources the students:

• Collected trash and examined its impact on the community.

• Made calculations about how much trash is created by Americans in a year.

• Were introduced to a selection of famous art pieces throughout history.

• Studied examples of how contemporary artists have recreated famous pieces in unique ways.

• Selected a famous painting to recreate using the collected trash.

• Reflected on the process of writing.

The Parkside Gallery at the library is available for artists, photographers and groups to reserve up to three months in advance. Exhibits can be displayed up to one month. Contact the library at (208) 769-2315 for information.
