SPIRIT LAKE - Austin Paulsen hit two free throws with less than 10 seconds remaining and the 5A Coeur d'Alene Vikings defeated the 3A Timberlake Tigers 57-54 on Thursday in a nonleague basketball game.
Timberlake had a chance to tie it, but a late 3-pointer bounced out at the buzzer.
"We had a chance to tie and just missed it," Timberlake coach Tony Hanna said. "It was a really good game both ways. They just outrebounded and outshot us at the foul line. They're a big, strong team and I think they're going to be successful."
Johnny Hayden scored 15 points for Timberlake (3-1), which hosts St. Maries on Saturday.
Tony Nacarrato scored 12 points for Coeur d'Alene (3-0), which hosts University on Saturday.
"They picked up their intensity a little in the fourth quarter," Hanna said of Coeur d'Alene. "They extended the lead to nine points in the fourth and we had a hard time chipping away at it."
