MATTAWA - The Wahluke girls came up short three times during a busy week of high school basketball last week.

On Tuesday it was Quincy winning, 35-31. On Friday LaSalle won 46-16. And Saturday, it was Highland winning, 37-29.

Coach Jeff Ahmann was disappointed with the first and third games especially. The Warriors led Quincy in the fourth period and had Highland down, 29-19.

The Warriors trailed Quincy, 18-14, at halftime and ran into foul problems in the third quarter. Two starters went to the bench, one of them fouling out.

"The girls played strong and even took the lead in the fourth quarter. But we just couldn't hang on, scoring only four points in the fourth," Ahmann said.

The Warriors were led by the 13 points of Liliana Ramirez. Maripas Olivarez had 1,Tanya Mendez 2, Marleny Garcia 7, Sonia Vasquez 2, and Sandra Mendoza 4.

"Going into the LaSalle game, we knew what kind of talent La Salle would have, with most of the team returning after placing at state last season," Ahmann said. "We were just hoping that maybe they would have an off night, but no such luck."

The halftime score was 40-4.

Mendez scored 2 points, Garcia 7, Ramirez 5, and Maribel Torres 2.

The Warriors lost to Highland in overtime last year and were hoping to turn the tables. They did for three quarters, leading 29-19 at one point in the third period.

"Then we got into foul trouble, and things went downhill fast," Ahmann said.

Highland went on an 18-0 run to finish out the game.

"Everything went right for them, and everything wrong for us," Ahmann said. "We have problems taking care of the ball under pressure and recognizing when a teammate needs help. But these are things we will work on and hopefully get things going right for us before we start league play next Saturday."

Garcia had a big game with 14 points. Olivarez scored 1, Mendez 2, Ramirez 7, and Mendoza 5.

Wahluke will open South Central A Conference East action at home Saturday against Royal.
