At least two free Christmas dinners are planned in Kootenai County.

The Athol Christmas dinneris scheduled 1-5 p.m. at the Athol Community Center next to the library.

There will be roast beef, turkey and the usual vegetables, potatoes, and desserts, as well as gifts for children and a visit from Santa's elves.

The old gym at the community center is turned into a winter wonderland.

The event is put on by the community for those who might be having a tough time or not have a place to celebrate the day, said Michael Shoffner, one of the organizers. Volunteers donate time, labor and money to make it a special Christmas, he said, and all are welcome.

"It's very touching," he said. "Come and share the holidays."

Nearly 500 attended last year.

For those unable to attend, deliveries are available. Call Rosie, 659-4801, or Dan, 660-1176.

KC's Breakfast Club in Post Falls is offering a free dinner and gifts for children on Christmas Day.

The event will run 10 a.m. to 3 or 4 p.m., when the food runs out.

This will be the fourth year the restaurant is providing the turkey and all the trimmings dinner. Last year, about 140 attended. Families and anyone else in need of a holiday meal is welcome.

KC's Breakfast Club owned by Tim and Caroline Jackson is at 740 Cecil Road across from the Wal-Mart on Mullan Avenue.

People wishing to help out are welcome to drop off cash or nonperishable food donations, and gifts for kids, 7 a.m.-2 p.m., Monday through Sunday.
