PRICE, Utah - North Idaho College overcame an injury to a starter the day before the game and a scary injury to a key reserve during the game to beat Utah State-Eastern 58-54 in Scenic West Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon.
Katie Buskey, NIC's leading scorer, rolled her ankle in practice Friday and did not play. Reserve guard Tori Davenport struck her head on the floor in the first half when she was knocked down on a drive to the basket. She complained of neck pain, and was taken to the hospital, but NIC coach Chris Carlson said after the game she was OK, aside from a headache.
"We played most of the game with eight kids, and one point guard, and man, did they pull together - it was an outstanding victory," Carlson said.
Angela Woods and reserve Mollie Kramer scored 12 points each for NIC (13-0, 2-0 SWAC), ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA. Hannah Love had 11 rebounds, Kabri Emerson had eight points and 10 boards, and Georgia Stirton played the point with minimal rest.
"It seemed like everybody made one or two big plays when we needed them," Carlson said. "We battled like crazy, pulled together, made big plays, and gutted out a great Scenic West win."
USU-Eastern dropped to 3-11, 0-2.
NIC plays host to the North Idaho All-Stars on Thursday.
