PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Daniels helps Viks hand University first loss

COEUR d'ALENE - Colby Daniels scored 14 points and the Coeur d'Alene Vikings defeated the previously unbeaten University Titans 66-51 on Saturday night in a nonleague game at Elmer Jordan Court.

"We just wore them down," Coeur d'Alene coach Kent Leiss said. "We played all 10 guys and they were tired midway through the second quarter. It was an extremely physical game and I thought we played great defensively."

Coeur d'Alene took a 29-19 halftime lead as the teams combined for 57 fouls.

Brett Bailey, who has signed to play at San Diego, scored 24 points for University (4-1).

"They were unbeaten and are a great team," Leiss said. "Bailey's an amazing player, but I think we wore them down as the game went on."

Austin Paulsen and Tony Nacarrato had eight points each for Coeur d'Alene (4-0), which hosts Lake City to open 5A Inland Empire League play on Tuesday.

RATHDRUM - Tyrel Derrick scored 19 points to lead the host Hawks past the Bengals at Hawk Court.

The Hawks (4-2) hit four 3-pointers in the second quarter and Lakeland took a 26-21 halftime lead.

"It was a defensive battle from there," Lakeland assistant coach Bill Ryan said. "Toward the end of the game, Lewiston had to foul and we hit our free throws."

Rafe Hewitt-Steiger led Lewiston with 17 points.

Matt Horne added 10 points for Lakeland, which hosts Pullman on Tuesday.

SPOKANE - Jeremiah Gagnon dropped in 12 points, but the Bulldogs struggled offensively in the second and third quarters in a nonleague loss to the Knights.

Nathan Schwartz scored seven points, T.J. Alsager six for the Bulldogs (1-6), who were tied after the first quarter before being outscored 33-9 in the next two.

"We just kind of got out-hustled and out-played. They were pretty physical and we had a hard time keeping them off the boards," said Bulldogs coach Tyler Haynes, whose team fell to West Valley on Friday night. "We have a little bit of practice before we go to the Lake City tournament, and we have some things to fix and take care of."

Sandpoint will travel to Bonners Ferry on Thursday night for the annual Moose Madness spirit game. Tickets for the game are now on sale at Sandpoint High.

SPIRIT LAKE - Johnny Hayden made 13 of 19 free throws and finished with a team-high 18 points to lead Timberlake past St. Maries in nonleague play.

Timberlake's Keegan Scott added 17 points and six rebounds, and Trevor Masterson had eight rebounds and six points.

Timberlake, which made 13 of 19 free throws in the final quarter and 21 of 32 for the game, trailed 23-20 at the half.

"St. Maries came out more ready to play than we did and outworked us in the first half," Timberlake coach Tony Hanna said. "We hit some big 3s early in the third quarter and the main difference maker was that we went to the line a lot and made them."

Timberlake (4-1) plays at East Valley on Tuesday.

Warren Joiner scored 21 points for St. Maries (2-2), which hosts Kellogg on Wednesday.

KELLOGG - Logan Sauer led the Wildcats with 18 points and Garret Wendt added 14 as Kellogg took an Intermountain League win from the Badgers.

"We didn't finish very well," Wildcats coach Jeff Lambert said. "We had some turnovers at the end we didn't need."

Sauer and Taylor Bircher each had seven rebounds for Kellogg (5-2), which travels to St. Maries to take on the Lumberjacks on Wednesday.

HARRISON FLATS - Junior post Jake Pfeiffer had 18 points and 15 rebounds to lead Kootenai past Clark Fork in North Star League play.

"The first half was back and forth, but we came out in the third quarter and got on a good run with a couple quick buckets," Kootenai coach Doug Napierala said. "Clark Fork had opportunities in the second half, but they had to go with a zone defense after getting into foul trouble and Ben Whipple hit a couple big 3-pointers for us."

Boone Benson added eight points and six rebounds for Kootenai (3-2, 1-0), which hosts Mullan on Tuesday.

Joey Hazinsky scored a team-high 12 points for Clark Fork (2-7, 1-1).

PLUMMER - Jordan Meshell came off the bench and hit four 3-pointers and the Knights handed Deary its first loss of the season.

"We struggled early, but we are really coming along," Lakeside coach Brad Calkins said. "We came back out and upped our intensity. We know we'll have to face these guys at state."

Sequoia Gallegos, a 6-foot-4 senior, had four blocks, three rebounds and three points for the Knights.

"He was a real presence in the paint for us, and he had to play big for us against a larger team," Calkins said.

The Knights hit 6 of 7 free throws in the last 40 seconds to seal the victory.

Austin Richert led Deary with 13 points.

Lakeside (2-3) plays Cusick in the first round of the Wellpinit tournament on Friday.

SPOKANE - Christian Pedersen scored 15 of his 26 points in the third quarter as the Panthers beat the Warriors in a nonleague game.

"Our defense really buckled down in the third quarter to help widen the gap," Coeur d'Alene Charter coach Chris Pedersen said. "We were a little sluggish in the first half, but it sparked us in the second half and got us running up and down the court."

Pederson also had seven steals and six assists and Bryan Smith had 20 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Coeur d'Alene Charter (6-2), which travels to Mullan on Thursday.

Jens Kuetemeyer scored 14 points for Christian Center School (2-4, 2-3 MCL), which is next scheduled to play Jan. 3 vs. Christian Heritage at the HUB Sports Center in Liberty Lake.

Ethan Sheetz and Christian Jesensky each scored nine points for North Idaho Christian (1-6, 1-4), which travels to House of the Lord in Priest River on Tuesday.
