Girls basketball roundup: Wildkats roll over Loggers

COLUMBIA FALLS — Columbia Falls (5-1 overall, 2-0 league) rode the early scoring of Hope Burlage to a 65-28 Northwestern A girls basketball victory over Libby on Saturday.

Burlage scored nine points in the opening quarter to finish with 15.

“She got us going,” Columbia Falls coach Cary Finberg said.

Also helping with the strong start were Ciera Finberg and Haley Belgarde. Finberg scored eight of her 10 points in the opening half, while Belgarde tallied 13 of her 15.

“A very good start for us,” Finberg said to the season.

“The girls played with a lot of confidence early on.”

BIGFORK — St. Ignatius used a fast start to upend Bigfork in a Class B nonconference matchup.

St. Ignatius led 11-4 after eight minutes of play and 15-10 at intermission.

“We never really got going,” Bigfork coach Mark Hansen said.

“We have a young team. We have to learn to play back-to-back games.”

Hanson said 27 turnovers also limited Bigfork in a big way.

Tessa Robertson had six points and 14 rebounds, both highs for Bigfork (2-4). Loren Erickson tossed in 13 points for St. Ignatius (2-4).

EUREKA — A big second half propelled Eureka to a District 7B win over Plains.

The Lady Lions held a three-point lead at halftime before outscoring Plains 29-14 after the break.

“We just made some little adjustments to the defense they were running,” Eureka coach R.J. McDole said of his team’s big second half.

Guard Alyssa White led Eureka’s offense, hitting 4 of 5 three-point attempts and scoring a game-high 14 points.

Eureka (2-3, 2-1) also got production from post players Cassidy Morgan and Carli Allen, who scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

“Our guards were seeing the floor pretty well,” McDole said. “They were driving, hitting them on the low block and our posts were finishing inside.”

Felicia Earhart led Plains with 14 points.

The win stopped a two-game losing streak for the Lady Lions, who will break for the holidays before returning to the court Jan. 4 in Whitefish.

WHITEFISH — Frenchtown used a big second half to pull away from Whitefish for a Northwestern A victory.

Frenchtown, up 18-9 at the break, outscored Whitefish in the second half 38-7.

Vanessa Stavish led Frenchtown, and all scorers, with 15 points.

Sarah Latcham had five points for Whitefish (0-5, 0-1)
