COEUR d'ALENE - Leading 36-30 with 1:56 remaining in the third quarter, Post Falls boys basketball coach Mike McLean told the players on his bench that they were now in their element.

Over the final 10 minutes, the Trojans proved it once again, beating the Anacortes Seahawks 58-43 in the opening round of the Coeur d'Alene Inn-vitational on Thursday on the campus of North Idaho College.

"The game was getting a little more intense and a little more physical," McLean said. "That's something that we don't necessarily shy away from. I thought we played a little better with some intensity and when we were diving on the floor. I was very happy with that and thought that's where we needed to be."

Post Falls (4-3) has yet to lose in the tournament, stretching its record to 13-0 in the annual event. They will face Glacier Peak (7-2) of Snohomish, Wash., in the semifinals today at 4 p.m.

In the late game, Coeur d'Alene sophomore Ryan Walde scored seven of his 15 points in the second quarter as the Vikings rallied to beat the Kelowna Owls 73-64 in the final game of the day.

"Ryan really sparked us and we had a big second half," Coeur d'Alene coach Kent Leiss said.

Coeur d'Alene will face Stanwood (7-2), which defeated Eisenhower (0-7) 64-25 in another opening round game.

Eisenhower will face Kelowna (4-1) today at 2:45 in a consolation game.

Post Falls 58, Anacortes 43: Trojans junior Corey Koski scored nine of his team-high 11 points in the second half for Post Falls, which led 22-21 at halftime.

“He did a good job of getting where he needed to be in the second half and his teammates found him,” McLean said. “He runs the floor well and we were able to get going and run the court a little bit.”

Post Falls hadn’t played since a loss at Hanford on Dec. 11 after having its annual Prairie Pig spirit game postponed last Friday.

“I’d like to say the layoff was a reason for our slow start, but it’s something we’re struggling with right now,” McLean said. “We tend to turn the ball over a lot at the start of games. As a coaching staff, we’re still trying to figure out why it’s like that. The 16 days off didn’t help, but our program will never have any excuses and we’ll continue to get better.”

Nick Hall, Tim Mueller and Dalton Thompson each had 10 points for Post Falls.

A.J. Yost scored 11 points for Anacortes (6-2), which faces Chief Sealth in the consolation round today at 1 p.m.

Colby Daniels scored 17 points for Coeur d’Alene.

“They play a lot like we do,” Leiss said. “It was two teams pressing at each other and it’s probably the closest I’ve had to a team playing like us. It was a great game in the fourth quarter. They didn’t give up and just kept coming. It was kind of fun to watch my young guys play against them.”
