Two Eastern Washington residents were injured in a snowmobile accident Thursday afternoon in Kootenai County.

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Department recreation safety section and Kootenai County Fire and Rescue were dispatched to the area of Forest Service Road 434 and Forest Service Road 612.

Rescue personnel used snowmobiles and contacted the injured subjects and the remainder of their party.

Medical personnel treated the injured man and woman at the scene, and they were then taken out of the mountains on a rescue sled to a waiting ambulance. They were transported to Kootenai Medical Center to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation revealed that Danielle White, 26, of Greenacres, Wash., was operating a rented two-person sled. Eric Windsor, 28, of Spokane, was a passenger.

It appears that White attempted to negotiate a corner on the groomed trail but was unable to make the corner and started going off the trail over a steep embankment, the sheriff's department said in a news release.

Both subjects jumped from the snowmobile and struck a tree, according to the sheriff's department.

The impact with the tree caused severe but not life threatening injuries to both parties.

The investigation showed that alcohol was not a factor in the accident and that White was a beginner to snowmobiling.
