COEUR d'ALENE - Coeur d'Alene boys basketball coach Kent Leiss admitted that Justin Carpenter was such a nice kid, that sometimes he's too passive with the basketball.
Friday night, there wasn't a time to be passive.
Carpenter pulled down an offensive rebound and scored on a layup as time expired to give the Vikings a 68-66 win over the Stanwood Spartans in a semifinal game of the Coeur d'Alene Inn-vitational at North Idaho College.
Coeur d'Alene (7-1) will face Glacier Peak of Snohomish (8-2) in today's championship game at 5:30 p.m.
In the other semifinal, Glacier Peak post Zach Pederson scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Grizzlies past the Post Falls Trojans 53-31, snapping the Trojans' 13-game win streak in the tournament.
"When you go to good tournaments, you're going to lose eventually," Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. "We don't really talk about it and kind of joked about it this year. We've played one game that really matters on this floor and that was last year against Coeur d'Alene (in the 5A Region 1 championship game). It's fun for our fans and our players with relatives from out of town to get down here and see us play that wouldn't get a chance otherwise."
Post Falls (4-4) will face Stanwood (7-3) today in the third-place game at 4 p.m.
Coeur d'Alene 68, Stanwood 66: Carpenter led the Vikings with 19 points and had a block on the team's final defensive possession to set up the final play.
"Last night, he had a stretch where he scored seven straight points in the third quarter (against Kelowna) and he brought it out here tonight," Leiss said. "He played a great game offensively and defensively."
Coeur d'Alene returns two players from last year's team and has only one senior on its roster.
"With the first eight or nine games, I wasn't sure how it was going to go," Leiss said. "But we're getting more and more confidence. We're not perfect and still need to take care of the ball and have some rebounding and defensive issues at times, but we're finding ways to win and showing a lot of character."
Cannen Roberson scored 16 points for Stanwood.

Glacier Peak 53, Post Falls 31: Glacier Peak outscored Post Falls 23-12 in the second and third quarter to pull away from the Trojans, who suffered their first loss in the history of the tournament.
"We just missed a ton of baskets," McLean said. "In and around the basket and shots we need to make. Then we got away from some of the things we were trying to do and started jacking up 3s trying to get it all back."
Keaton Corr scored 16 points to lead Post Falls.
Point guard Dreu Vader scored 13 points to lead Glacier Peak.
"I was impressed with their point guard," McLean said. "That's as good of a point guard as we've seen in a long time. He gets the ball where he needed to and he really makes them go."
