Are you struggling to take a breath?
Dr. Amy Spoelstra | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 13 years, 10 months AGO
We all know that breathing is a vital function, however many of us take that for granted.
Many things can make it difficult for us to take a deep breath, such as asthma, pneumonia and COPD (coronary obstructive pulmonary disease). When we look at the spine structurally we find that nerves in the upper back go to the lungs and these nerves help regulate function, such as inhaling and exhaling. Many times we may or may not get any warning and then one day we can barely take a deep breath and are wheezing. Did this happen overnight? The answer is typically no. It has been an underlying problem that finally expressed itself in the form of a symptom.
When we have a misalignment of the spine, this can cause not only symptoms but affect how well our body is working. Deep, slow breathing is the key way to bring oxygen to your lungs, bloodstream, heart and brain along with removing carbon dioxide and other particles from the body. However, when it is compromised it has damaging effects on your overall health.
A research study was done on 58 individuals who were measured before and after chiropractic adjustments for pulmonary function; testing included forced expiration within one second. Of the 58 people, 33 were considered abnormal in pulmonary function and the remaining 25 were within the normal range.
Over two-weeks of adjustments, the abnormal group showed the greatest increases in lung function and 42 percent of them were within the normal limits at the end of the two weeks. This shows that when our spinal health is compromised it is going to affect how well things work. Don't wait until vertebral misalignments affect your health!

Focus on ADD/ADHD
You have been seeing the terms ADD and ADHD very often in our recent articles. This is due to the fact that our Focus program is now in full swing and we have begun helping children and adults in managing their sensory integration issues such as ADD/ADHD or patterns of being impulsive, hyperactive, inattentive or exhibit an unexplained lack of productivity.
Chiropractic goes beyond pain
Our bodies are amazing. Think about that statement. As you do, also think about the fact that you probably took a breath, blinked your eyes, moved a limb, moved your head, focused your eyes, digested food, healed a cut, wiggled a toe, salivated and a million other internal operations. Although you were not readily thinking about all of these processes, they were going on without the need for your input. Your brain, while also supplying you with conscious thought, is simultaneously orchestrating a laundry list of functions to keep you alive and well.
