ELKS HOOP SHOOT
Four kids will be representing the Coeur d'Alene Elks Lodge on Feb. 11 at the Idaho State Hoop Shoot Championships in Burley.
The quartet earned the trip by winning their age divisions at the District Hoop Shoot on Jan. 28 in Kellogg.
For the second straight year, the Coeur d'Alene girls swept the competition between lodge representatives from Kellogg, Wallace, and Sandpoint.
Breanna Widener used an impressive second round to notch a come-from-behind win in the girls 8-9 year-old division. After the first 10 shots in the competition, Kellogg's Piper Rainio held a slim 5-4 lead over Widener. Rainio went cold in the second round, hitting just four of 15 shots. That opened the door for a more consistent Widener. Widener made three of her last five shots to earn the 12-9 victory. Sandpoint's Harlee Meek was third with 6 successful shots in 25 attempts.
While Widener had the luxury of being the last shooter, her teammate in the 10-11 year-old division, Sydnee Rud, was in the leadoff spot. Rud started off the competition strong, hitting six of her 10 shots to forge a narrow one-shot lead over Wallace's Rylie Gunderson. The second round started rough for Rud as she missed her first seven shots of the round. However, she was able to get back on track and made five of her final eight to take a six-point lead over Gunderson.
Gunderson had the opportunity to take advantage of Rud's cold start in the second round, but suffered a similar fate, missing nine of her first 10 shots in the second round. That gave Rud the win 11-8. Sandpoint's Heather Yunek was third with five points while Kellogg's Jaron Figueroa was fourth with four shots made.
The girls 12-13 age group ended up being a runaway for Coeur d'Alene's Keelie Lawler. Again, the Cd'A girl drew the first spot in the competition and put the pressure on her competitors by hitting nine of her first 10 shots. Sandpoint's Grace Kirscher made four of her 10 shots in the round with Kellogg's Kaitlin Kinnick rounding out the competition hitting just two of 10 shots.
When Lawler was done with her second round shots, the contest was over. The 13-year-old made 11 of 15 shots to give her a total of 20, making it impossible to be caught by either of the other two girls. Kinnick had a strong second round to catch Kirscher at the end, forcing a shootoff for second place. Both girls ended up with 11 points but Kinnick hit on four of her five extra shots while Kirscher made just one, to end up in third place.
In the boys' half of the draw, Coeur d'Alene's Zach Mackimmie earned his third trip to the state championships in the last four years. As has been his custom in previous district appearances, Mackimmie started strong and never let up.
After missing his first shot, Mackimmie sank his next 14 attempts - nine in the first round and five in the second before he missed again. His final score of 20 out of 25 was too much for Wallace's Zachery Welch. Welch put together two good rounds, but found himself behind Mackimmie after both, finishing with 17 points and the runner-up trophy.
Kellogg's Tyler Gibbons and Sandpoint's Damian Dalthorp ended the contest tied for third before undertaking a marathon tiebreaker. Both boys made two of five shots in the first tiebreaker and four of five in the second. Finally, Gibbons hit four of five in the third tiebreaker while Dalthorp sank three of his shots. The tiebreaker earned Gibbons the third-place trophy.
The boys' 8-9 year-old category was the closest of the races. Coeur d'Alene's Drake Prohaska raced out to an early lead, sinking eight of 10 shots in the first round. Wallace's Brenden Bailey was close on his heels with seven points, followed by Kellogg's Graden Nearing and Sandpoint's Ben Tatlock at six each.
Nearing was the first to shoot in the second round and turned in the best round of 15 shots in the competition, hitting 12. His 18 total points put the heat on the rest of the field. Prohaska, up next, missed his first three shots of the round and never quite found his first round groove, making nine of 15 and finishing with 17 of 25 for second place. Tatlock had 16 and Bailey 13 to take third and fourth, respectively.
The boys 12-13 division looked to be a two-horse race after the first round with Coeur d'Alene's Brayden Menti and Sandpoint's Dylan Johnson making seven of 10. In the second round, Menti couldn't find the range to keep any streak going while Johnson hit six of his last seven to seal the win. Johnson ended up with 17 out of 25 while Menti was in second at 14. Kellogg's Ethan Keele was third with 12 points and Wallace's Seth Dechand was fourth with 10.
