POST FALLS - Jerome Moss feels back at home.

Moss opened Double Discount Groceries on Wednesday in Post Falls at the former Caruso's sandwich shop location at 402 E. Seltice Way.

The business sells many of the groceries and general merchandise offered in large chain stores, but at a discount due to various reasons.

"It may be short-day goods, outdated, dinged and dented or the label has been changed," Moss said. "You may see a ding or a dent on a product, but what's inside is still good."

Moss recently closed Handy Mart 2 and Bargain Groceries on Fourth Street in Coeur d'Alene across from Capone's Pub and Grill because the building will be demolished and new storefronts with residential on top are planned for that location.

The business has moved to Post Falls under the new name of Double Discount Groceries. The move has been a homecoming of sorts for Moss, who grew up in Post Falls and worked for his mom and dad, Robin and Jeff, for two years at Handy Mart on Spokane Street.

"It will be nice to see the good old faces from Handy Mart," Moss said.

Moss acquired Handy Mart 2 from his dad about six months ago.

He said that store was doing well, but he hopes the Seltice Way location will be even better because it's on a busy two-way street in the heart of town as opposed to on a one-way that many travelers use as a quick way to Interstate 90 from downtown Coeur d'Alene.

Moss said the Post Falls location is also close to multiple thrift stores, so he's hoping to cash in on having bargain hunters close by.

"It was a perfect time to move (because the Post Falls location became open in conjunction with the new construction project in Coeur d'Alene), but I wasn't prepared for it," he said.

Moss said many of the products he sells, which are purchased from various suppliers in the region, are priced at 50 percent less than at supermarkets.

For example, cereal that may sell for $3 to $4 elsewhere is $1.69 to $2.19 for the same brand. Twenty-ounce sodas are 99 cents or two for $1.50.

Moss said he hopes to have his beer license by the end of the month. One other person will work at the business besides Moss.

The business will be open seven days a week.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Sunday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
