Washington State on Wednesday announced a signing class of 28 players for new football coach Mike Leach's first recruiting class.

The class includes 11 offensive/defensive linemen, five linebackers, five wide receivers, three safeties, two running backs, one quarterback and a kicker.

"Our staff did a tremendous job of putting together this class," said Leach. "We looked for three things in particular: we needed offensive linemen, we needed defensive linemen and we looked for guys that were good football players."

Leach added, "It was the same as when I selected our staff. If you look at our staff, every one of them on some level is in the habit of winning. With regard to these football players, we tried to select guys that were the same. Not how big is he? How fast is he? How strong is he? Can he play football is the first question we asked."

Boise State: Broncos coach Chris Petersen signed 18 players, including quarterback Nick Patti from Dr. Phillips High in Orlando, Fla., who is one of six players who are already enrolled at classes at BSU. He was the 8A Florida player of the year last fall.

The lone Idaho signee is D.J. Dean of Eagle, who is listed at wide receiver but who may end up playing defensive back for the Broncos.

Eastern Washington: Beau replaced a Bo with a "Bowe" at quarterback.

Eagles coach Beau Baldwin signed quarterback Bowe Merin from St. Mary's High School in Stockton, Calif. He brings to three the current number of quarterbacks in Eastern's program to replace graduated Walter Payton Award winner Bo Levi Mitchell.

In all, Baldwin signed 20 players to letters of intent in this class.

Montana: Grizzlies coach Robin Pflugrad signed 23 players, including two from the Spokane area in offensive tackle Max Kelly from Gonzaga Prep and wide receiver Chase Naccarato from Mt. Spokane.

Another recruit is Nick Holt VI, a linebacker who redshirted at the University of Washington last fall. His father, former Idaho coach Nick Holt, was fired as the Huskies defensive coordinator following last season, and the son transfered to Missoula, where he is enrolled and will be a freshman this fall.

Idaho State: Drew Sharkey of Ferris, who had committed to Eastern Washington, changed his mind and signed with Idaho State, where he'll join Ferris teammates Kurtis Karstetter and Cole Lemer.

Former Eastern Washington coach Mike Kramer signed 17 high school seniors, including Hayden Stout and Cody Abbott from Meridian High.
