Six different wrestlers for Mission-Charlo placed at the Darby tournament last weekend, including three freshmen: Jamie Mullins (105), Jay Wadsworth (112) and Pasco Green (125).
"It was great to see this group of freshman have some success and get a chance to medal," Mission-Charlo head coach Lyle Cronk said.
Mullins and Green both took fourth in their weight classes while Wadworth took third.
Also placing was 215-pounder Chadd Anderson with third, 135-pound Scotty Gilleard took second and 160-pound Jacen Petersen took first in his weight class. The three will be contenders going into the Western B-C divisional tournament this weekend in Phillipsburg, but Cronk is also optimistic about other grapplers on his team.
"Jacen, Scotty and Chadd, have been wrestling tough all year and have a shot at an individual title but just as exciting are some of our other wrestlers who are looking for first state birth by placing in the top four," Cronk said.
Mission-Charlo got a tune-up last Friday, wrestling against three other teams they'll face at the Western B-C Divisionals: Eureka, Thompson Falls and Noxon.
The quad showcased just how tough Mission-Charlo wrestlers were as several picked up two wins in mixer action and showed that even if you get them in a tough spot on the scoreboard, they can still battle back and win the match.
"Steven Bravo had a great come-from-behind win. He has done a great job lately of always going for the win," Cronk said. "Jamie Mullins also had a come-from-behind win. I always tell our team not to look at the score but to focus battling for the entire six minutes."
Bravo was one of the wrestlers that had two pins, one coming from behind and one up a weight class, Cronk addeded.
Now it's postseason time, and you'd better bet the Bulldogs are ready to get down to business.
"We have our work cut out for us at divisionals as we do not have a full team," Cronk said. "We will focus on leaving everything we have on the mat next Saturday let the chips fall where they may. It should be an exciting tournament."
