Chiefs edge Royals in SO

SPOKANE - Blake Gal and Mitch Holmberg scored in a shootout to lift the Spokane Chiefs past the Victoria Royals 6-5 in Western Hockey League play in front of 7,709 at the Spokane Arena on Friday night.

Spokane used goals from Dominik Uher, Cole Wedman, Holmberg, Marek Kalus and Liam Stewart to grab a 5-2 lead midway through the second period.

Three unanswered goals from the Royals - the last of which was scored by Robin Soudek with 35 seconds remaining in regulation - sent the game into overtime.

Eric Williams made 24 saves in three periods for the Chiefs, who held the Royals without a shot on net in overtime. Williams also stopped two of the three Victoria shots in the shootout.

The Chiefs (29-15-4-3, 65 points) play the Kootenay Ice at 6 tonight in Cranbrook, British Columbia.
